One day when I was poking around Softaculous I came across this software and so I decided to go check it out. It looks like a fairly active community. While it looks like the last release may have been about a year ago the support forum itself still seems to be thriving.

I'm curious if anyone has heard of this option before?

Yep I have used it before. It's based on SMF, and is pretty decent. I prefer SMF over it but it doesn't hurt to try it out and see if it's worth it for your community!

ElkArte is acctualy not bad. It offers features like responsive design, easy customization, and decent security. Being open-source is a good point for developers.

I seriously considered using it when I switch back from Xenforo to SMF but didn't because I had concerns about its long term support. That said if I was to starting a new personal forum as apposed to something more commercial it would be at the top of my list.

I like ElkArte and will be using it on my next project. The developer is working hard right now for V2 which looks really good.

I do not know much about it, I have heard about it before but neverr really looked into it

I have used it a few years ago when it was in its early beta days

I checked their themes and they look tempting. However, I am not willing to take a risk with it because you never know if they may shut down at some point in time. I am trying to use some of the platforms which last for decade.

I honestly don't blame you there. I don't see Elkarte doing that but you just never know these days. It's good software if you're familiar with SMF it's a fork of that software so some things are similar.

The Only one that me sad when it closed was FreeForums and Icyboards and LayBB they then rebranded but then closed again lol

EDIT: Nope they are still there but their name has been changed to TidyBB on Softaculous but their support Website is gone offline
