Email validation

Usually when Forums have email activations I just Leave and wait until they activate me.

Yeah... most forum owners don't appreciate laziness.

We have it enabled here. It is not really to keep bots out, it is to help keep banned users out.

When we ban a troublesome user, they usually try to set up a new account (or in some cases set up 2,3 or even 23 (rough guess) in the case of EvanP). One banned user tried setting up 100+ account here over the space of a few months. If you have no email validation, the email could be fake. They could enter [email protected], [email protected] etc and can still post. Email validation means they have to have access to an email account. Even if they use a temporary email that can work (we do have alot of disposable email domains blocked here) but it does waste their time a bit more and if they find one that isn't blocked, we block that when we ban/delete them and they then need to find another disposable email site that we haven't blocked. People with real emails, usually don't mind but it keeps the troublesome banned users and helps keep some spammers away from the forum so in a way it is for the members benefit but helping to keep troublemakers and spam away.

If they do that than just ip ban them. Also I used to never have an email and it would get annoying when I did exchnages with Forums that require email activation.

There are thousands and thousands of proxy IP's out there and we can't block them all. A key to stopping them is layers of protection. Once they find a new proxy, they would be in. If you have more levels of security, it is not as easy for them. They have to keep getting around all the various measures and it makes they waste more of their time and makes it alot harder for them.

over the years i got a long list or proxy ips to ban and disposable emails so on a new forum it hard for them from the start i might share the list with everyone later

I have email activation on and we're still a brand new site. Why? Because it keeps spam bots out. Nothing aggravates me more than when I register on a forum and a person DOESN'T have email activation on and just lets people wander. It only takes a few minutes to activate a link, so there's no sense in complaining about it.

Email activation has been around for a good decade now, at least. I am pretty much very used to it and it actually surprises me when I join and it says "You may now proceed to login in and start posting" type of message. Yes, it is a pleasant surprise but I am not expecting and certainly I wouldn't demand it.

There are different reasons the admins want you to register your email but mainly reasons are:
1. If something happens there is a way to reach the member base.
2. You can identify trends that help you filter out spambots and trouble users.

I think it is not a bad idea to activate it as soon as you create the site but that is each to its own. You might think that one is annoying but Admin-activation is the worst for me. You have no control at all. At least with this is it is usually a painless process. The email reaches you in a few minutes, a click and you're in. it also helps me by having that email in case for some reason I lose the bookmark.

the only thing that has annoyed me of giving my email has been for the type of communities that send you newsletters way too often or send you "we miss you" letters if you haven't post in a week or two. XD I don't mind some newsletters and reminders but there is not need to make them that often.

That is true, Like sometimes I havent visted a website in like years, and then there's a random " I miss you Email"

It's quick and easy. It doesn't annoy me at all. An effective way of preventing spam. tbh, I pretty much receive the confirmation email as soon as I sign up, so no complaints here. Clicking a link isn't so hard, right? If you don't receive it, then there may be option to request a re-send of the email. Failing that, try to PM an admin to activate your account, if you're able to PM? That's pretty rare if it gets to that stage, doesn't really happen often, if at all.

If the email is not there, that's really annoying. If it is, I don't much care. It's part of th process these days. If the email does not arrive, I'm very tempted not to bother with that website.
Such emails not arriving though used to be much more common than it is now.
