What is your thoughts on this message
"

Your account has been created. However, this board requires account activation, an activation key has been sent to the e-mail address you provided. Please check your e-mail for further information."

Does that annoy you some times? Or mainly whenever you go check you email , and you still haven't received the email? Because it really gets on my nerves when I have to wait a while , I suddenly start to lose interest. What about those messages the forum send to you after like decades say " We Miss you" I always LOL at those . Sometimes im like nope, nope I haven't forgotten you , Im just not going.

Absolutely hate it. Specially when your filling an order and you have to do that. Should charge extra for validation.

If I owned a forum with 100,000 members, I would like to keep spam out, so having that message would filter most of them out. It's a safety precaution and if you don't like it, then leave. It may be annoying, but remember, you only ever see that message once on a forum, so let it be.

In some forums when I register before I start to have the ability to post I have to click an activation link found in my email. I think this is profoundly retarded lol. People think they know what they're doing when they have to make member activate their email address to think they're professional or whatever but in the long run it's not really going to make members post because they don't want the hassle of going to their email just to be able to post in the forum they just joined

That's a poor reasoning. If the member wants to contribute than a simple click of a link won't hinder them. Only lazy people tend to rant about a few simple clicks. Why not click the link the next time you check your emails? Is it that much of an issue?

I am on a forum with about 350,000 members (open for 8 years) and they have email validation. Why doesn't your reasoning reflect that forum? I believe digitalpoint also has email validation and they are doing better than expected. They are professionals, and saying because they have email validation is unprofessional, is really "profoundly retarded".

I wouldn't call it "profoundly retarded," because I can see why forums would have this. I really do absolutely hate it, but I can see why forums would need it.

Yeah I dislike it so much. And some times I don't it doesn't even comes.

I think it can be beneficial to a forum - but not if the forum is a newer one.

yeah only for that though. Otherwise you shouldn't have it

When I was doing packages, it was a pain in the ass to keep validating my account, especially when my email was a throw-away email. But I do understand why it's enabled. It keeps stupid spam bots out.

I love it, but hate it.

We have it enabled here. It is not really to keep bots out, it is to help keep banned users out.

When we ban a troublesome user, they usually try to set up a new account (or in some cases set up 2,3 or even 23 (rough guess) in the case of EvanP). One banned user tried setting up 100+ account here over the space of a few months. If you have no email validation, the email could be fake. They could enter [email protected], [email protected] etc and can still post. Email validation means they have to have access to an email account. Even if they use a temporary email that can work (we do have alot of disposable email domains blocked here) but it does waste their time a bit more and if they find one that isn't blocked, we block that when we ban/delete them and they then need to find another disposable email site that we haven't blocked. People with real emails, usually don't mind but it keeps the troublesome banned users and helps keep some spammers away from the forum so in a way it is for the members benefit but helping to keep troublemakers and spam away.

Yeah that's a pretty good reason. But on a brand new forum, that should come later.

That depends though on what members you attract (people on a childcare forum wouldn't understand about ways to get around bans so you could last years without enabling it). People on forums like this one are quite knowledgeable and are more likely to know and use ways to TRY to get around bans in which case you may need it alot sooner. If a member objects to spending about 10 seconds checking their email and clicking a link then to be honest, i am not really bothered if they don't bother doing that and leave their account unactivated. If they can't be bothered to click the link then no doubt they wouldn't bother reading rules and so on if they are that lazy.

Yeah. I was doing an exchange with someone and I left it on and the guy got mad at me.

It's pretty standard for any forum, or other site you join to have to activate your membership by email first. As someone mentioned up thread, you only have to do it once. However, I have an issue when it takes too long for the activation email to be received. In fact if I'm on my forum and I see someone "awaiting activation" I'll select that member and activate them myself.

Usually when Forums have email activations I just Leave and wait until they activate me.

You must not be on a lot of forums then. 😛

I don't mind it as long as I get the email and can click the link and be activated.

I don't like email activation, as it takes up your time, but I agree with the person who've said it's not a big of a deal. Administrators sets the email activation system turned on just to decrease the chances of Spam Bots activating their account, and for more safety reasons.
