Noticed: I copied this off holfy.com, I seen it to let you all see it...😛

In special session, the United Nations General Assembly voted 165 to 6 with one abstention to shut down the Internet. The reason given was that the rapid and uncontrolled flow of information was destabilizing the governments of many of the member states. Furthermore, the Internet has increasingly become a vehicle for fraud and scams. Finally, the Internet produced the infamous "DOT COM" debacle which had disastrous repercussions for the World economy.
(Lol, I can just imagine all of the computer illiterate complaining about spam or what-not, which adds to the debate. Ahh, some people.)

Experts say China is assisted in its censorship efforts by hardware and software provided by many major U.S. technology companies.

The Australian Federal Labor Government (elected on 24 November 2007) has a 'plan' to force all Australian ISPs to implement server-based filtering/blocking systems to block adults' access, on a compulsory/non-optional basis, to Web content on a secret blacklist compiled by the ACMA (a government agency).

Do you guys think its really the end of the Internet? I heard that it will shut down in 2-3 years from now is it true?

Um, if it is then Im totally screwed on getting my kids new clothes ! lol

If it was the end of the Internet, why wouldn't it be posted all over the news, the Internet itself? Beyond that, why wouldn't there be countless people talking about it?

I can't see it happening within a snap of a finger. These guys, or whoever they are, are going overboard. Not ALL the Internet is filled with spam and adult content, not ALL the Internet is bad.

The UN doesn't have as much power as you think they do, leave it at that 🙂

No one listens to them.

I don't think the end of the Internet is anytime soon. If the UN wants to shut down the Internet because of porn, spam, fraud and scams why don't they just delete those websites or make it where people can't get on any those sites?

DM is right.

But down with the UN for this evil...lol jk. 😛

I almost want to say what UW's official idiot would put 😛

Do you know a Solar Storm would shut down the internet and all communications.

Yes, and the fastest one hit Earth in merely 18 hours. They also make craters on Earth.

It's completely impossible. Since the Internet runs on a network of cables and connections, they would have to manually cut these cables. If not then people would create bootleg programs that allow Windows and Mac computers to access underground servers, most Linux Distros would update to work with this within the first few days due to their open source nature. If the governments then did start to cut cables and such, makeshift satellites and wireless transmitters would start to show up. It's possible for me to take my router and increase it's signal to allow others around me to access my "pirated" network. Would the Internet as we know it stop? Yes, the information would become harder to gather and collect, but it would still be there. As long as there are geeks willing to break laws to test the limits of technology, the "Internet" (or some global network) will stick around.

Wires can be cut and happen sometimes which means pepole cannot acsess the internet but all cables would have to be cut for it to close.
This below shows a map of a cable which was cut

@iCrazy
And what about users that connect via satellite? Cutting cables may shut the UK down, but the USA will keep going. Also remember that high powered routers can have their signals strengthened to increase the range, meaning that private networks can't be stopped (and if they try to jam it, we pick a new channel... it's a losing battle on their part). Once we get a system down, and everything figured out, the Internet could go "live" again via all the geeks creating a mirror network, completely wireless. I know a few people who have access to old war satellites, if they used these to connect with then there is NOTHING any government could do, who owns space? 😉

I repeat;
As long as there are geeks willing to break laws to test the limits of technology, the "Internet" (or some global network) will stick around.

If you researched abit more you would understand more and that the USA uses cables too 🙂 Alot More than the U.K.

Who owns space
The UN does and has international laws on it 🙂

It's pretty much impossible. They can't just snap their fingers and say, "Okay, the Internet's going down." It just won't happen.

The USA was built on cables, but we've advanced more wirelessly than you guys have from what I read. For example I hear over there your ISP often provides your wireless router, where over here we have companies like Belkin and Netgear that make ones that can be toyed with.

Even over time the Internet could not be stopped. Think about it, way back people used to do illegal books sales and trades, then there was the underground railroad (slaves). If it becomes illegal then we'll just use pirate signals to transfer the data, kinda like the Matrix in a way 🙂

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. 😉

Without the internet our economy would get even worse... trust me.
