Yeah, over here, they use it every once in a while when it is official, but you will normally see cell phone.

Actually the British, who invented soccer, created the name association football to refer to soccer in order to distinguish it from rugby football. Soccer became a shortened reference to the word asSOCiation football. Therefore, soccer is often used to refer to association football in countries where another form of football exist.

Also the governing body of English football is called the Football Association.
