I was going for something warm, inviting, and professional. Tell me if you think I succeeded or not?

That's a really nice design, I like it 🙂 However I think the search bar would look better if it was further right and the footer is a bit empty.

I agree with you about the footer. I've moved the footer links to the left hand side and added a sign up newsletter field in its place.

The problem with moving the search bar to the right is it would break the 960 width I have going and wouldn't be aligned with anything else.

That is one cool design! Everything looks nice and smooth. The colors are vibrant and exciting! Great job!
