Have you ever just given up a on a site that you once loved? Either out of frustration over the lack of traffic or because you didn't have time anymore. What would cause you to give up on a site?

I had a C&C fan site and gave up on it because nobody joined. The C&C fans didn't come because there were already many other well established forums abut it.

C&C = Command and Conquer.

I did, and it fact it was my most successful forum. I gave it up because the problems were out of my reach. It was my fault too to let a member I trusted to handle the hosting, which turned out troublesome because once that member got busy the site was forgotten. Troubles came... and we were over. I learned from my mistakes, though.

When I launch a new website, I usually give it a full year or two to take off. If it doesn't, I count my losses and normally shut it down. However, I rarely lose interest in projects that I have a lot of passion about. If I start to get stressed or bored with a website, I usually go do something else to mitigate more stressful feelings. I can jump on my road bike and ride 20 miles getting my heart rate up, working on my fitness level and enjoying the outdoors. After that, my stress is usually gone and I can easily start being active on my website again. 🙂 Sometimes you need to step away from the site for a little bit, clear your head and then return.

Were you ever involved in a forum project and lost it for reasons you could not control?

I had a flash gaming website, I tried my level best to promote it and bring it up, how ever no luck and gave up!

That is usually how it happens...

You give loads to the forum and it gives nothing back.

I'm pretty sure just about everyone has done this, but I can only speak for my self. I have given up on a site that I loved. I had a site once that was really active for graphic design. The demand for graphics died and so did the forum. I've made a few here and there that I've gave up on. 🙁 Sad to see them go.

I remember launching a forum that I was really keen on managing and expanding.

After about 2 years, I started to lose interest and just handed it to someone else who seemed really enthusiastic about it.

I've tried video game forums in the past, and I've tried keeping them active and posting and posting and there came a time when I had to just give up. Even after networking a boatload, constantly posting and attempting to do everything I could to advertise my forum, I just gave up. No one was interested and I couldn't bother anymore.

I am starting over again in hopes that won't be the case, but it seems my members are slacking off again.

I have bought domains that I originally thought were genius and thought that a forum would grow rapidly on it or at least a few members a day. When I get a lot of content on something and it doesn't grow at all for weeks, then I normally give up on it and move on to something different. Depending on the topic and the niche, it maybe be something that just takes time to build and its all depends on whether or not its worth the patience required for it to grow or not.

I closed many sites before, sometimes it time to move on especially when you're trying and analyzing a lot of things at the same time.
Always focus on the thing that gets you the most traffic and maybe some $$$

I've closed the same site 3 times now. Once for inactivity, second time because of funds and the last time because after I left for a month the site was almost entirely dead :/

I plan on trying again for the 4th time, but not until I can find someone interested in starting a Nintendo site as well. I'd rather develop for the site than be the the Admin in charge of activity/promotion.

There was once I set up a forum similar to GeekStep. But uses shared hosting and phpBB at that point. After a few months, there were very few active members and I got tired of funding the shared hosting and decided to dump it.

Of course, and it's perfectly fine. If you make a calculated decision that the return for your work isn't even going to match, then it's probably better to call it quits earlier than later. Just don't regret it.

I gave up on many site that I have made in the past.
Reason begin, I dont have the money to get a domain and a good web hosting.

I have given up on a couple in the past, Like Shawn said you give it time and if nothing happens time to cut your losses and move on. I will say most of the ones I have started I ended up selling and not just shutting them down.

I've tried once, and now trying again to create my Sci-Fi Forum and then broadcast.

My issue the first time was trying to launch it much too early. This time, I'm giving myself 2-3 months to finish the layout, install all MODS, create the images etc and then test it for a few days...I do not want to make the same mistake.

When we fail, it is mostly due to a lack of maintenance, promotion or motivation.
