Does anyone have one? How do they work?

I'm thinking of getting one to store all my music on and stuff. Would it be able to be used to transfer my music from my old pc to my new one? I can't be assed to do it any other way really and iTunes is a bitch to move pc to pc.

Has anyone done this before?

Yep. Get a Western Digital (WD) one, they are really good. They work just like a thumbdrive, so pc2pc is easy. If you have a few GB of RAM, trasferring massive amount of data takes next to no time.

Nice, cheers!

Does linking one to your computer slow it down? I'm thinking it shouldn't affect it at all? I want to link one up to a computer that i'm going to buy so I can store a load of crap and not have a slow running pc from it.

You should make sure both your PCs have USB 2.0 ports since if one of your PCs use the slower USB 1.0/1.1 . It will take a long time to transfer large amount of files.

USB 1.1 speed: 1.5 and 12Mb/s
USB 2.0 speed: 480 Mbps

If both of your computers has firewire or e-sata, I recommend firewire and e-sata are faster then USB 1.0 and 2.0

Hooking up a external drive up to your computer should not slow it down, but the transfer speeds are usually slower then your PCs hard drive which can be as fast as 3Gb/s for SATA II drives.

But, if you use a E-sata drive, or USB 3.0 drive moving and reading your files should be just as fast or faster then your PC hard disk.

I recommend Western Digital as well.

if you can do pc 2 pc it would be faster then pc to external or any other hard drive... it would save you the time to do pc(old) to external then external to pc(new).

I personally use FireWire and would recommend LaCie drives as they are pretty good imo.

I use Lacie hard drives as well. They are pretty quick, and has not failed on me.

I wouldn't buy any USB2.0 drives, since USB3.0 is coming along with much faster speeds.

Firewire or eSata are the best ports around right now.

I dont but i want one. They work by well acting like a "external hard drive" lol. Basically a massive flash drive that you just plug into your computer and if you want to take it somewhere simply unplug.

I just want one so i can put all my media on it and stream it to my xbox 360 since now i finally got one thanks to my gf, oh how i love her 🙂

I have a external harddisk, it simply works as a pen drive . With the hardisk a usb cable is attached, simply plug it into the usb port and it starts working.
