One big problem I've seen is they aren't very engaging. You could even have a group of 100,000 members but get little good engagement. For instance, I've finally ran into a Facebook group of about 20,000 that seems to have engaged and knowledgeable drummers. In that case, I'm getting real feedback and attention, good and bad for what I do. That's a huge boost to morale.

People love saying, Facebook Groups took over forums but this isn’t true.

Forums are engaging.

Facebook groups can be engaging if talkative knowledgeable people are there.

Before I came back to forums, I was on a few Social Media groups on Facebook & Mewe. There was a lot of talk but no discussions. I too prefer forums where it's organized better.

People in facebook groups are usually trashy and poor (in general) so when they see someone trying to make a few dollars they automatically hate you. I saw someone trying to sell a tablet they got on black friday for a profit and people tore her apart. I'd avoid it in that sense...

now on the other hand, selling used items like furniture and electronics, that can do really well in the facebook groups. Just don't let the people know you're making money on it.

People on Facebook seem to be really hateful and toxic people.

Hard to believe people think groups & discords have replaced forums.

Maybe Trump will let Canadians sign up first.🙂
I will go make an account and see how long it takes.

I’m Australian so I’m guessing I be last on the list.

shark tank yes GIF

They’re using a open source social network software so wouldn’t surprise me.

I really depends on the group's manager and the people in the group.

I have a group that is about 20K members. It is a local group and have competition with another group like it with nearly 70K members.

Facebook has reached out to me, got me on local news and invited me to a "big group" community. I beta test and all that stuff.

We (me and my team) engage with members daily and we try to correct the complaints that fans have with other groups with ours and kick out the negative stuff.

It works. It is more successful than any forum I've ran. But it doesn't make me want to give up on forums. I think forums, niche-based specifically, have more community because people did take the effort to join a website that is solely about the niche unlike that of Facebook.

I think a lot of people hate Facebook groups because they hate Facebook, which is like the Walmart of online community.

Facebook users are weird, They hate on Zuckerberg but use his app anyway.

I rather it take time for me to build my site and it all be legit members that like what I do.

I built my local brand with Facebook and the folks are legit to what I do, I have met many of them. The brand has made me a local influencer.

But that isn't going to be the case with every niche.

I think it would be way easier for a local niche to build a brand from it than a tech niche. I think a forum is probably the best option for you. If you wanted to pivot from that without social, I'd suggest video on YouTube, blogging or even podcasting. My two cents at least. 🙂

I agree! 🙂

Forums are good to huge topics like technology where a lot of things need to be covered a group doesn’t cut it.

Where groups are good for simple things like astronomy groups for example!

I’ve definitely thought about adding YouTube to my project too.

YouTube is a lot of fun when things start aligning up and working.

Consistency is going to be your biggest asset there.

When I started out on YouTube, I didn't expect over a couple dozen. I'm about 3,500 subscribers now but over half million views. Most of my dedicated fans are not subscribers because most of them don't get that part. I try not to let that worry me too much as I can't really monetize with ads anyways. I qualify but where I film requires permits a lot more than what I'd earn in profit.
