So I made one of the only Tourette community discussion sites, and because it's such a slightly rare disability, I cannot simply buy ads, so I have been joining communities on facebook and appropriately been advertising (Not spamming it around) and it's gotten me 2 members in an hour, so It's working. Has anyone done this, I'm unsure if it's because my forum is based on a disability or not, I can only imagine it's working so good because of it. But if anyone has tried this, tell me your results. If you have not, I'd suggest joining groups around the discussion of your website and promptly advertising it at appropriate times.

I have tried but, for me at least, it didn't work out like I hoped for. Twitter did the same thing to me, really nothing came out of it. I had a page for my forum and had about 35 likes first off, but really nothing came from it. Maybe I just don't have the "touch".

I can't say for sure since I haven't experienced the good effect myself, but I believe there is. Advertising in specific community is one of the best ways to advertise because you're right around people with the same interest. Even if they don't register and become active member right away (because not everyone likes posting), I think it's a good way to start. From there on you'll just have to add content regularly at your forum and at the Facebook page (with link back to your forum, I guess) and be friendly.

I don't think Twitter works because it's rather limited for communication/conversations. Just for updates/quick info, it's good.

I think this depends on genre/category of each forum so I can only say do your best!

I do this for my blog and it works out pretty well, actually. Both Facebook and Twitter have been pretty big assesses to me when it comes to promoting my blog.

I'm not talking about a facebook page. Something I just found out is joining GROUPS that your niche is in, and advertising there is something that has worked wonders on.

I have never tried this and will never try this. I did at one point have an FB account for my forum so that my members could find out updates and changes to the forum, but considering the fact that FB is against privacy, and I am a staunch supporter of privacy, I steer clear of anything that even remotely reeks of FB.

I am sure that it is an effective means of promoting websites, but for me, user privacy is far more important than hits.

Facebook advertising is great for targetting specific types of people, ages, gender, location, etc. I haven't tried it, mainly because I don't have the money atm, but I can believe that it's as good as it claims to be.

I didn't spend a dime advertising? I don't even have a facebook page for the forums I was talking about. I simply joined Groups in the niche and advertised there. Completely free, and works wonders.

Oh, you're one of those spammers. Those spam posts are the reason I left most of the groups I joined.

Facebook is good for free promotion if you do it right. Dont make it an ad, make it an extension of your site/forum.

No, as stated several times I incorporate it in a non spamming way. I encourage them to go there, but will never join a group for the sole purpose to spam my ads. This is negative promotion, and looks really bad as a company/website. I will simply join, tell them I own x site which is in the nitche, and that's why I am so interested in joining. Bam, I have a link to my page, people actually click it, and can now carry on with conversations in the group.
