What are your thoughts on these facial recognition glasses?

"To use it, you just put the glasses on, then as you walk by people the glasses will detect when somebody's face is in frame," Ardayfio says in a voice-over. "This photo is used to analyze them, and after a few seconds their personal information pops up on your phone."

"The information our tool collects from just a photo of your face is staggering," he adds.

The tool is partially a pairing of hacked Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and the PimEyes face search engine among what the duo describe as "five established technologies." The glasses have built-in cameras, speakers, microphones, and AI capability, and link with phones via Bluetooth. They also give you a classic Buddy Holly look, if you're style-conscious. The glasses can live-stream directly to Instagram and Facebook, which is important for facial-recognition use.

Not sure how I feel about these!

I understand in any public setting you have no reasonable right to expect privacy - totally understand and agree with this. The potential for these glasses to exploit people’s information whilst they are potentially blissfully unaware is massive.

I agree. It's already unbelievably easy to pull up a lot of personal information on someone you've interacted with remotely through the Internet. To be able to do it on the fly, with someone close enough to be within your line of vision, puts that person in immediate danger.

From what I've learned from a lot of my friends online is that they don't want people to know who they are, or any info about them. They want to remain as anonymous as possible. These glasses would remove all anonymity as you're walking out on the streets, going to stores, etc...

They want to remain as anonymous as possible.
That would be me. I learned the hard way to do whatever I can to preserve my anonymity and I'd encourage everyone else to do the same.

Some years ago there was a classic example of why revealing your real identity on the Internet is a terrible idea. Blizzard, the gaming company announced they were going to make it mandatory that you could only access certain areas within their domain including forums using real IDs. Thousands of customers tried to tell them why this was a bad idea.

A member of staff at Blizzard attempted to demonstrate confidence in the idea by revealing his real name on the forum. Within a very short period of time a Blizzard fansite published all his personal details including his address, phone number, photographs and the name and locations of close family members. That put an immediate end to the idea.

But don't you remember when all our information used to be in the White Pages for everyone to see? Including our families with the same name?

We had something similar in the UK (yellow pages) plus we have an electoral register but I've always opted out of both.

I think back in the day it was a little different, you maybe got added to a marketing list with the details you could find but nowadays the level of exploitation available from something like this is massive?

I don’t actually see the benefits these glasses would bring unless it was in a healthcare setting and it could bring up the medical history/notes of a patient or something?

It would help police to get criminals, especially if there is a warrant out for their arrest.

This sounds absolutely terrible. It's also a invasion of privacy. I just don't see how this could be allowed.

Personally, I find the technology below in gross violation of a person’s privacy & SAFETY. It will not only recognize your face, it will bring up your phone number, address & any other info on the web about you. Example: Some creeper sees a girl he’s stalking, gets all this info on her, waits in a bush by her house (has the address) and attacks/rapes her

All the more reason for women to carry a weapon.

We shouldn’t live in a society where women feel the need to carry a weapon with them (I’m aware though this is sadly the reality for many) I don’t think these glasses would help with this either 😔

Women have always needed to learn to protect themselves from others. It's just how humans are. I carry pepper spray with me wherever I go even though I've never had to use it...yet. I make sure that those who look suspicious can see me pulling it out of my purse or my camelbak.
