I'm wondering if I should create a fake member to help my forum gain some activity. I'd feel bad doing it, but it'd also help.

Do you create fake members?

No I always get other people to post using exchanges and such, having a duplicate can be okay but if it becomes too active, then it becomes a problem.

Fake members are nice, so long as you don't reply to things with the same answer. It is easy to make tons of posts, but if you can make it look like they are actual different users than yourself, then that would be a whole lot better.

I have done this before, but I don't really do it anymore. They can be very good though, and come on, who doesn't enjoy a conversation with himself or herself.

Never done this but i know alot who did and was reallt 50/50 on the outcome

Do post exchanges. get Real members. even if they're only there for one trip, it helps to get new members adding to discussions.

Fake members are a tricky issue. I think there's a difference between putting on an elaborate act and using fake members to jumpstart discussion.

Surprisingly, if you look at the blogs of elite, successful forum owners, creating fake members to foster discussion is pretty standard.

Just some food for thought.

Fake members can help out by making your site active. However, if you need to have people to at least look at your site. That way they go from guest to users

I would not recommend fake members unless you are advertising EVERYWHERE

Or get a friend to join? 😉

I personally don't use fake members on forums, although they obviously look like they help. Problems can arise from it though. It makes your forum look active when it actually is not. It also brings up the problem of those who are sticking with your forum possibly leaving if and when they realise that it's actually you.

I used to do fake member accounts when I first started trying to run a forum.... but then I stopped because I felt silly creating fake accounts just to start discussions or to keep discussions going. One thing I did find, though, was that by using a fake account, it's easy to start discussions with it but it's not easy to get discussions going with it, e.g. by replying or whatever. So if I did go that route again, I'd probably do it to get discussions started, but I'd never use it in terms of replies or anything though. I may be good at pretending but even I'm not that good.

Do it, post the member name you pick, then we'll go to your board and watch you have conversations with yourself.

I did this. The fake member I made became more popular then myself. I ended up not using it anymore to the outcome of everyone being sad that the member left. LOL

I'll confess... I made fake members on my forum, to boost a bit of more activity on my forum :| Although, I am pretty good at making them look, sound and type different to me 😛

I haven't used fake members on any of my forums, but I have done post exchanges which I'm more comfortable with, than talking to myself.

Would you mind sharing links to any such blogs?
