Family terrorized by harassing messages received from..

One way they could do it is with a camera and an IR Repeater. Hopefully they find out who's behind it. I wonder if they do other things to the box other than type messages.

I read that, but I have never heard of an IR Repeater, and have no idea exactly how it would be accomplished. It really seems like just a troll, I doubt they've done more You never know, though.

I just think that it's pretty dumb to do such a thing. Whoever is doing it needs to get a life. I watched the video footage of them typing "FOX59", and I thought that it was pretty weird. If they would have known they were there, it would have to be someone nearby or someone using a camera. That lady is probably going insane thinking someone's hiding in her apartment. Interesting, but not worth getting in trouble and possibly getting arrested for.

What I find even more crazy is that she switched boxes, but it still happened. I know this woman is scared for her granddaughter's safety, but I think she should just start ignoring the messages. Turning off the tv/box won't do anything if the hacker can turn them on, but if the family ignores this immature idiot, he'll get bored and most likely move on.

That's what I don't understand. Maybe it's a universal remote signal? I agree and think that she should just ignore it. Did you read that they did a police report on it to, and he was a witness too? If I was the hacker, I wouldn't even play around then. What if someone is constantly watching her? That's pretty weird...

He knew the police officer was there, but still went with it. Either this hacker has balls of steel, or is actually a child predator/serious stalker.

Whoever it is apparently can't find something better to do.

The article said this just recently started. I think the woman should think back to who was there/who visited the home around that time. That may produce some answers.

I was reading the comments and someone wondered if they had an XBox One with Kinect. This kind of stuff is scary, and just goes to show that you can't really have much privacy as you could in the past.

That too. Just goes to also show that anything electronic can be hacked if the person knows what they're doing. I rarely ever use my laptop's webcam, and always unplug it when not using it. I've also pretty much forbid my daughter from using a webcam unless I'm present with her.

While the final sentence of what you said is true, it also comes down to being smart about your electronics. No one should ever leave their webcam plugged in and facing the direction that they are in. It also is a bit of common sense. Don't let people in or around your house that you don't know. Don't talk to people on XBL/PSN you don't know, etc. I've considered making a safety forum listing these types of things.

I actually have an XBox One, and this kind of stuff makes me feel like my privacy can easily be invaded, and it can. I actually put the cover on the camera when I'm not using it, just because of this kind of stuff. I heard theories before that people sometimes watch you through Kinect if they have it setup right, which is why I always cover mine.

Can this stuff happen? Yes, but it doesn't happen as frequently as you think. It's good to be a little weary of things like that, but I wouldn't think too much into it unless you're experiencing odd things or have a reason to believe someone is invading your privacy. Most people who know how to hack things like this don't really waste their time on people that mean nothing to them unless a) it's a political figure. b) the person is a predator and stalking. or c) it's someone wanting revenge.

I'm sure you personally are fine.
