Internet Freedom, specifically.
The U.S. Senate’s Judicial Committee unanimously passed the controversial ‘Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act’ today, a bill that could be used to crack down on many BitTorrent sites and other file-sharing platforms. The bill would give the Department of Justice the unprecedented power to take over domain names of websites that are deemed to facilitate copyright infringement.

Things look bleak with how well received COICA is between the US govt. So yeah you say torrent sites will be gone, who gives a feck. Well where do you stop? The bill conveniently would allow wikileaks to be taken offline, and then anything the MAFIAA sees fit. Youtube?
Best part is they're arrogant enough to think they can control the internet for the entire world. This bill will allow the mafiaa to take down foreign websites as well. Who knew the "land of the free" would restrict internet usage in a similar way to China or Iran.

Of course, if you want to attempt to be heard, http://demandprogress.org/ is a great place to support. Too bad they aren't the ones with the deep pockets though...

Does this include foreign copyright materials? Will the U.S also take off foreign websites because it has copyrights of foreign songs?

Re: Fascist regime of America leading the fight against free

I hope this does not include streaming radio and video sites otherwise I be so bored with nothing to watch or listen to.

Re: Fascist regime of America leading the fight against free

xD Good thing we voted in tons of Republicans. Our government really needs to become MORE authoritarian than it already is.

Unfortunately, Patrick Leahy is the one who is behind this nonsense. (A democrat)

Re: Fascist regime of America leading the fight against free

An email i got:

big news! Yesterday the Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to send the Internet blacklist bill to the full Senate, but it was quickly stopped by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) who denounced it as "a bunker-buster cluster bomb" aimed at the Internet and pledged to "do everything I can to take the necessary steps to stop it from passing the U.S. Senate."

Wyden's opposition practically guarantees the bill is dead this year -- and next year the new Congress will have to reintroduce the bill and start all over again. But even that might not happen: Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Hollywood's own senator, told the committee that even she was uncomfortable with the Internet censorship portion of the bill and hoped it could be removed when they took it up again next year!

This is incredible -- and all thanks to you. Just a month ago, the Senate was planning to pass this bill unanimously; now even the senator from Hollywood is backing away from it. But this fight is far from over -- next year, there's going to be hearings, negotiations, and even more crucial votes. We need to be there, continuing to fight.

I'm sure he is. The parties, in essence, have few ideological differences. In the United States, we choose between two right-wing parties.

You never seem to get it....here's it in kindergartner's terms
Tea Party = Libertarian
Tea Party = Republicans, overwhelmingly
Therefore many Republicans are Libertarian

However, to prove that liberals/Dems are authoritarian:
Democrats = Higher taxes (overall, since Obama wants to raise taxes on the upper class and keep the same tax breaks for the middle class)
Higher taxes = More government
Government = Authoritarian (unless you want to argue that government = libertarian)

Democrats want more regulation such as gun control, Patriot Act, affirmative action.

In the United States, we choose between two right-wing parties.
"Modern liberalism occupies the left-of-center in the traditional political spectrum and is represented by the Democratic Party in the United States."
Scott N. Arnold, Oxford University Press

Just because you're leftist doesn't mean that everything else in the world is right wing. That's just like me saying that there are two left wing parties in the USA, the Republicans and Democrats.

Re: Fascist regime of America leading the fight against free

Democrats aren't liberals.

Most are
Most democrats think they are liberal. In reality they are all closer to moderate than liberal.

Re: Fascist regime of America leading the fight against free

To be honest, both politcal parties (except for the Tea Party members of the Republicans) are close to moderate. The issues that divide the two parties are mostly social issues.
And the reality now is that nothing can get passed without bipartisan support, proving that the US can't be conservative or liberal.

Re: Fascist regime of America leading the fight against free

Hulu.com and Youtube.com should be taken down, since you technically download parts of the videos onto your computer.

Re: Fascist regime of America leading the fight against free

I hate how all the politicians want to end freedom on the internet.

Re: Fascist regime of America leading the fight against free

The US Government seems to be going after bittorrent and counterfeit websites by stealing their domain names even without this new COICA bill being passed and made law.

The US Government has seized a number of sites in the US related to copyright infringement, one of the sites seized is a BitTorrent search engine called torrent-finder.com.
If you visit the site, you will see the following message (pictured below), which shows that the site has been seized by ICE and Homeland Security Investigations.

The seized site doesn’t host any torrent files, and has no torrent tracker, it also list no copyright works, unless someone searches for it, the site is in effect a search engine, similar to Google, albeit specifically for BitTorrent files.

Apparently, you can have your domain seized if it can be used to find pirated material, but almost any search engine can be used to find torrents.

I don't get why homeland security needs to be part of seizing counterfeit and bittorrent domain names since they don't pose much of a likely threat to US security.
