Here is what I did to get 10 members looking at my board on the first day of opening. I already have 178 posts in the first 12 hours. And I just started the FaceBook promotion thing an hour and a half ago. I haven't seen anybody else use or do this trick before so this is my idea.🙂

After, let's say for example your theme is about, oh I don't know Anime. Maybe a bit too general, we'll go with Naruto.
Now here's the deal, you are making a Naruto themed forum and you don't know how to get some users because either ForumPromotion isn't working for you, or you just aren't having any luck. Remember when I said make a FaceBook account? Here is when it comes into play.
Step 1: Since your forum is about Naruto in this case. Go to your search and type in Naruto. See if any fan pages come up. As you can see there are a few fan pages with some thousands of fans. Go there and become a fan. On the fan wall, talk about how much you love Naruto and at the end transition in a smooth way linking to your forum and why people should join it several times a day every day. Doing this will create traffic, not guaranteed but people will definitely click the link.
Step 2: Now. Go to the "Fans" box and click see all. This is where it could take awhile depending on how much time you have/want to spend. I spent about 30-45 minutes adding people on the list of the Naruto fans and attaching a message explaining to them how great my forum is and why they should join it. Immediately, people will add you as their friend, see the attached message and you will be able to make status updates that they will all see. You can now advertise with the number of friends you have on that account.
Maybe I just got lucky, but it has worked for me. So far, after 20-30 minutes of adding friends, I already have 68 people who have accepted and many more that are still pending.

To this moment I am still using this and seeing results, which is why I am sharing this the moment I discovered it. Hopefully people will find this post help, and useful; and as an end result have more traffic/activity on their forum.
