I don't really pay attention to them either. Usually someone points it out that there isn't one and one gets made. Mine is a black box with a green colored "R" in the center.
I used to have one for mine, but since my forum got hacked, I havent re-added it.
Yup, with apps becoming more and more prevalant, favicons are becoming more and more necessary. I even have an application icon, just in case.
I had learned how to do one awhile ago & it's nice to have.

Favicons is my number one priority when making any site 😛 But that being said it's simple and easy nowadays as in your ACP you have an option to upload 😉 Aren't like the old days when I Was using SMF and I had to go into the root of all the folders and files and find the location to point it to.
I do on my forum. Normally I use something that has something to do with my forum.
Always use a favicon it's an easy identifier by people to know your brand.
