I despise elevator music with a passion. It's not so much the music I dislike, it's the context. Songwriters and musicians put their heart and soul into creating a song and to hear it used in an elevator, retail outlet or for advertising purposes is a crime. Well it probably isn't but it should be!
Bossa Nova in general is good for background music. Try Wave, Blue Bossa, Black Orpheus, Desafinado, Meditation, Girl From Ipanema (I know somebody already said this). I don't know how jazzy you are but if you can read lead sheets, flip through the real book and anything that says "ballad" or "bossa" would probably work.
