Re: Feedback Topic + Standard Review

I just love your logo and the little forum icons look great too. Maybe you should let the forum descriptions be displayed instead of them being in tooltips as it just makes it look a bit dull at the moment. The free games offer sounds interesting but this isn't properly advertised on the actual site so maybe you should add it somewhere visible. This may get more people to join the site

I greatly appreciate your suggestions, I've changed up the forum to include all of what you stated. Thank you for your advice, greatly appreciate it 🙂

When I first visited Gamehandout, the first thing I notice is your logo and theme. I am really impressed with the currently theme and logo you have. This is excellent.

I am greeted by a pleasant message at the top of your forum. The messages change and display different information. However, The messages displayed at the top of the page are to fast. You need to slow them down allot. I find it very hard to read it in a short space of time.

I did notice as I was scrolling down and I noticed a " Share This Page" button. I would personally move this towards the top of the forum because users would most likely notice it more and the more people who Share this on Facebook and twitter the more traffic you would probably get.

Overall, Gamehandout needs some work to maximize your potential as a forum. Hopefully by improving some of the feedback that I have given you, Gamehandout can improve and become a big, successful forum.

Re: Feedback Topic + Standard Review

Thank you so much Infected for the ideas and review. I appreciate that a lot, and I've changed them as well. I didn't even realize that the notice changed that fast. It was set to 4000 milliseconds. I changed it to 16000. Appreciate the time you took to check out my site 🙂

I agree with what kingcool52 said here.

The small and unique logo is interesting. Certainly a different take than creating big banners or complicated images. (Well, technically speaking creating your current logo may be more complicated than creating non-moving banner, but yeah.)

I agree that the vital point is to display your strongest content at the forum. Especially since apparently there is no blog to display the content, you will definitely need a category/forum to display and advertise the free games you want to offer. And if you can give emphasize to indie games that may not be so popular but are awesome, I believe you have good basic content for the forum. Now it's about pumping the community and their attention.

I wish you all the best with the forum! :great:

Re: Feedback Topic + Standard Review

Thank you Migi, Though not ALL our games are indie games, however... most are. We're giving away Dead Space 2, Mass Effect 2. Older yes, but they're not indie games 🙂

As for the rest, thank you for your opinion on the site, and glad everyone loves our logo/design. We made it all ourselves (Sage and myself) 😀

The first thing that I see when I visit the site is the custom welcome message. It is wonderful to see that you have made the effort to change this into a more suitable message for a gaming community. Big things matter in forums, and so do little things and the welcome message is a little thing that makes a big impact on the forum.
The next thing that I see is your logo, it has been custom made and animated for your forum and it suits it's purpose really well. It is a very nice logo and it fits the design of the board, especially the header. The category headings fit the theme of the forum, which works well with the genre of the forum.
One thing that I did notice was that the headings fro your categories are too close to the bar behind them. I can tell the text is lighter, but I think it would benefit from being made a bit more lighter.

Originality
[note]========== BEGIN - Originality ==========[/note]
When you run a gaming forum, a difficult but vital aspect is originality. I can see that you have a 'Winners' section which tells me that you do giveaways to members. This is a good way to get members, but it seems that there are only 2 threads in this forum. This should be utilized a lot more, as it has great potential. Have regular competitions and make sure people know when the next one will be and get some good prizes. You could use Steam games as prizes, maybe?
Your 'deals' section is also a part of the forum I have not seen on other gaming forums. This is a good, original idea that can benefit your members a lot.

Firstly, I read the post 'About GameHangout' and it gave me a real insight into your past and it has a great history. You seemed to do a lot of give aways a few years ago and that seemed to be what you were all about, so I would suggest starting to do them again to bring your member base back. As you said in that post, your forum has been lying gathering dust and I think it's time to start getting your members back! You can use services such as the Package service here on FP and there are loads of members that will do post exchanges with you. Do another giveaway and make sure everyone knows about it and that will draw a lot of people back and hopefully some new people who haven't heard of you before. Make sure to keep doing things like this regularly, maybe not giveaways, but competitions.

Final Remarks
The forum overall is very good with a good idea. I think the reason that your member count is not as good as it used to be is, as you said, because you didn't have time to maintain it. This is not an entirely bad thing, because I can see that you want to get it started again and that is very possible if you put time and effort into it. Make some post changes, make use of the services here on FP and do some competitions, these are the things that will draw members in and hopefully, make them stay.

"You could use Steam games as prizes, maybe?" We have over 30+ games we're currently giving away in the shop section of the forum. Which we will be using for other giveaways as well.

Thank you for the review @Enigma Greatly appreciate it.

Re: Feedback Topic + Standard Review

I like the medals part of the forum, and the favicon is really neat. I personally would prefer something of a fixed-width so it doesn't take up my entire screen. 😛 Other than that, looks good.

Re: Feedback Topic + Standard Review

Your logo is creative and cute (though maybe cute isn't the best thing for a gaming forum), but your theme overall looks too much like the default. You need something more customized/styled for your forum. Brand it.

Your forum titles look spammy as well. Using random all-caps, multiple (or any) exclamation points, short/unclear titles, etc. doesn't look good.

Review Type: Feedback Topic + Advanced Review
Extra Notes: It's a gaming community where we give back to the gaming community. Free games, servers, reviews, and more. Forum currency you can trade in to get some amazing free games, all for being active on the community.

I love the logo and the fact that it is similar to your forum post icons is a really nice touch. Your forum posts count is good although for the number of members you have it isn't the best. I'm guessing that either a lot of your members don't post or some are spam members.

My first impressions of Game Handout were rather average. When I first come upon your forum, I'm greeted by a decent header and a really good favicon. Something that takes some real points off here is that huge blue text block above your first category. It's a really cool idea to have a block of text in your header with some basic information about your forum, but the blue doesn't look very good at all. I'd highly recommend that you change the color of either the text, or the background of the block to something a little different (especially with the background of the block) to something softer that would fit in to your theme a little better.

Design Quality
[note]========== BEGIN - Design Quality ==========[/note]
You have a really good theme that's responsive, and that's really easy on the eyes. The one thing you could do to make your design significantly better is to add forum forum specific icons for each one of your boards. If you look at how FP, and most other forums have it, they're all unique to the specific forum. If you do something like that, it adds a lot of originality to your forum, while at the same time shows how much work you've put into your forum because everything will be unique to specific boards.

Your forum's statistics are OK. They're not anything especially impressive, but they're not bad either. You have good statistics and daily posts in your core areas, but everywhere else looks pretty inactive. The off topic section, especially on a gaming forum, is highly underrated. It's pretty easy to get activity in these areas as well. Posting topics about sports, politics, and other random interests isn't hard at all, but it doesn't sacrifice quality at all; but it's not hard to make these types of topics. Regarding your exchange area, it's also pretty inactive, even more so than the off-topic area. I'd highly recommend you, and your staff members attempt to do things like make gaming YouTube videos, and attempt to recruit some members to be in these videos with your section on the forum.

Originality
[note]========== BEGIN - Originality ==========[/note]
Gaming communities very rarely have any originality at all. However, your's breaks the mold to a degree. While you're not highly original, you've at least made a really good attempt at being original by giving away games, as well as a blog. Specifically about the blog, it seems to seap unused potential. Since you own a video game forum, you're obviously playing video games a lot. You should definitely use this exact same interest to benefit your blog. Here's what I mean: how many video games do you play every week? Think if you spent thirty minutes reviewing one, or even two of these video games weekly. You would be able to have quite a few video games reviews in your blog archive. While you've been doing a good job at this so far, you can definitely keep it up and improve your blog significantly.

Site Structure
[note]========== BEGIN - Site Structure ==========[/note]
One of the things that will drive away viewers very quickly is poor navigation. Your navigation for the forum is good; I would even dare to say great. You have a category for everything needed, haven't outdone it with the categories, and all of your categories are at least semi active (and as I said in the "Site Statistics" category, it wouldn't be hard at all to get all of then active).

The major thing I see is on your blog's navigation: or lack of. There is really no navigation at all on your blog it seems. While it's awesome that you can get other people to write for your blog, you need to do a better job with navigation. You already have a sidebar on the right side, and you already have a tab system which means you have the framework for a navigation system. If you were to add a search type function on the right sidebar for the tags that you already have, it would greatly improve navigation. It's so much easier to just click a button if I'm looking for something related to Mario gaming, instead of having to scroll all the way down to find an article about Mario Gaming.

Spelling & Professionalism
[note]========== BEGIN - Spelling & Professionalism ==========[/note]
If this was solely about spelling and grammar, you'd grade excellent. However, while your spelling and grammar is very good, your professionalism isn't at all. It's completely understandable that a gaming community won't have the same level of professionalism that other forums might have, but some errors here look really bad. First off, it really bugs me that you have a bunch of emotion codes, but without an emotion to go with them (example "😀" should be " 😀 "). It really does look a lot better like that than it does currently to have your emotions show up.

GameHandout is an awesome community so far. There aren't many major issues, and you've laid a very good groundwork to your forum. If you improve a few things around the edges, and keep moving, you'll do well. Best of luck in the future.

Biggest like about the website?: The theme is awesome, I really like it a lot.
Biggest dislike about the website?: I cannot stand the smiles not showing up. If you want to use them, use them. If you don't, don't!
What could I do to make you (the Reviewer) join my website?: Keep growing and have the admins as active as possible.

Thank you for the review @Quacker John, I'll be looking into all of this, but what throws me off is "Biggest dislike about the website?: I cannot stand the smiles not showing up. If you want to use them, use them. If you don't, don't!" All of our smileys are used on a daily basis, and I for one tend to over use them *At least one in every post*. So, I'm unsure what you mean by this. When you use smileys they automatically show up, and we have almost a smiley for every type of emoticon like XD XC :3 etc.

As for the blog, and navigation, we're currently in the process of adding a homepage to the site, which will display all the game reviews, the top game review of the week, as well as various other stuff which would help with navigation. I'll also look into adding the search in the sidebar of the blog itself, we currently have a lot of stuff in the side bar as it is, and I'm not trying to add too much more to it, as it will look too clustered.

As for the youtube, we're going to be starting up this soon as well. We're going to be allowing member to post their own videos, have video game reviews, top 10's etc.

Once again, I appreciate you taking the time and effort into putting forth a review. I'll look into fixing, and changing the things you've said, as well as adding onto more of them.
