What are your views on this? Back in the 4th grade, when music classes were mandatory, our music teacher brought up how females were easier to sing along with than males. He brought this up after noting that we did a great job singing along with this female singer (I don't remember who the singer was or what song we did... this is back in 1999) but we didn't do so swell singing along with a male vocalist. I suppose back then, in terms of variety of male and female singers, it was probably easier to tell who you sang along OK with and who you had a hard time with, because there wasn't a lot out there in terms of options, and as this was school, your choices were limited anyways. For instance, now days, I find myself having next to no trouble singing along with Bowling For Soup on some of there songs. The only one I really have a hard time with is their remake of "Baby One More Time". In fact, the only thing I like about that version is that you can actually tell they're singing lyrics, other than Britney Spears... Anyways, BFS, despite being a male singing group, are real easy for me to sing along with. Backstreet Boys are comparitivley easy as well. In terms of females, I have no trouble with Britney Spears on a lot of her stuff, and Spice girls are pretty easy too. Sorry if I sound vague I'm kind of tired right now.

When we had this speech choir combined with Gregorian chant for the project of my students, I realized that this is true.

Were the speech choir/chanters male or female or a mixture of genders? I also find some mixed groups easy to sing along with as well, as long as they have decent vocal registers.

Ashley they were mixed. That's the problem: not all of them have decent vocal registers. Most of the boys, due to puberty, have deep yet underdeveloped voices which make them sound as if they're out of tune. I have no issues with the girls since they have good registers.

I have heard of this with professional singers. Some have amazing registers that makes them easy to sing along with. Whereas others while their intentions are good.. let's just say sometimes it's easy to tell who could use some improvements or who are fine where they're currently at.
