The United States is considering building a fence and barrier's at certain points along the border with Canada. My position? As a Canadian I think it is a reasonable consideration for the U.S. Canada's Immigration situation is so lax and laughable that I have often joked that Canada has nothing to worry about from terrorist's because Canada is where old terrorist's go to retire. There were reports, I'm not sure if they were confirmed, that some of the terrorist's from 9/11 came to the U.S. from Canada. The only down side: We lose our spot in the Guinness Book Of World Records as the longest undefended border.

What do you think?

Canada nor Canadians are threats to the US so no fence.

It's not to keep Canadians out but it is to keep the Yanks in, they are they threat 😛

(PS I am Joking 😉 )

I really don't see the point of this. It sounds like a huge waste of money to me. I don't even see the point of having the Mexican border "closed." People still find ways to get into the country.

It will make it much more difficult.

Until I see a source, I will continue to believe the thought of this is complete and utter nonsense. In fact building a fence on the US/Mexico boarder would help in no way (except with the creation of jobs).

I can imagine the cost of such a fence being worth more than the benefit of building it.

"Iforum", with all due respect, I believe that Snobo's point here is the stronger one. Yes it will make it somewhat more difficult to cross the border, an inconvenience that should take all of about a day to bypass. A lot of money for one day. Just my opinion! 🙂

I also don't like the idea of "closed borders" and "illegal immigration." In the United States, the "illegal" immigrants often end up paying taxes without getting anything in return, so it doesn't hurt anybody and may actually benefit us (for example, the taxes from illegal immigrants are keeping Social Security going).

I honestly believe (I'm not just spewing here) that most opposition to illegal immigration comes from racism against Latinos rather than a sense of "justice." The fact that the Mexican border has been closed for eons while the Canadian border is completely open sort of proves this if you ask me.

We finally agree on something!

I've recently been rethinking my stance on immigration. I still don't believe that we should have 100% open boarders, as this would encourage the trafficking of guns/drugs/terrorists/humans, but I think the United States should have some sort of policy allowing an easy way for one to become an American citizen. The easiest way I can think is military service, but there are undoubtedly other ways that this can be accomplished (maybe the path to citizenship can be building a US/Mexico wall? hehe 😛 ). I still believe that there needs to be an effective way to keep out terrorists, villains, and gangsters from bringing crime into the US, which I have no clue how this can be done. If terrorists/villains/gangsters/drugs want to go from US to Mexico or Mexico to US, they will find a way. A wall isn't going to stop them.

I personally think this would be a huge waste of money, and a bit of a waste of time and effort. If they built this fence it would have to be manned as well, because people just climb over the fence or cut through it.

I personally feel fences are not that great at keeping unwanted people out of your country since the Mexicans are tunneling their way into the US according to News reports.

Possibly, hiring more national guard, FBI agents, and law enforcement to catch people who enter the US illegally might be a better use of time and money. Flying unmanned Drone plans, remote Cameras, and surveillance vehicles might be more useful then a fence.

If someone really wants to get into the US, they can always use a boat, and paddle into the US.

For the very determined, they might hitch a ride on a plane, and land or parachute down to US at night.

That's sad. 🙁 The longest undefended border was a source of pride for both countries. Now it's gonna be more taxes to waste.

Don't worry we can just cut education funding some more instead of spending any extra money.
