Okay, I did a firmware update for my Sansa Clip which is almost a year old. Should I have done it sooner? How often should the firmware be updated on these things? I also get an option to do the user manual as well. Do I want to do that too? Just wondering.

I'm not sure. I generally just don't update my firmware unless I'm having problems or there is a a feature that I really need on the new firmware since if I update my electronics with a firmware made for another MP3 player it can make it not work very well.

Live and learn I guess you could say! All I'm going to have to do is just play around with it and find out what's all happening.

You really don't need to update. Sometimes there are serious updates that add tons of new features, but that almost never happens.

Indeed, I notice updates for firmware don't really do much. I updated my router's firmware, and my computer motherboard's BIOS and I notice no speed increase or improve usability.

Although, some firmware updates can fix compatibility issues with older or newer operating systems and computers.

Okay, so bearing that in mind, is there some kind of email newsletter you can subscribe to that would tell you if there were any major updates available or something?

Some computer hardware and electronics makers have a software program which checks for the latest firmware and install it with a click of the button.

That's what my MP3 player does. If you plug it in to add songs from WMP or any other program, there's a little icon showing of your MP3 player being plugged in that appears in the taskbar at the bottom. From there you can click on the MP3 player Icon and check things out from there. I dunno, that's what I did to check when I did this the other night.
