I am happy to announce my Forum that was hacked, it has been restored to normal (we lost 500 posts but its better than losing them all)

For those of you who have left cuz of the hack, please return to, http://www.globalpokeunion.com/
:cheer: :cheer:

Sad you lost that many posts. 500 posts is allot of work for anyone to do..on any forum. 😀

I'm mainly upset about the lost topics. Me and some friends made like 90 yesterday.

That's good that you got it fixed, and it shouldn't be that hard to replace 500 posts. This should be a wake-up call as to why you need stronger passwords. Forumotion seems to have a thing for when sites get hacked, but this is also why you really shouldn't be using a host like Forumotion anyway. You can't obtain backups, and if you get hacked, since you can't obtain backups you're pretty much in trouble. This is why you need a host where you can get backups should this ever happen again. This is the biggest reason why I'm reluctant to join Forumotion ran forums anymore, no matter how nice they look.

The backups is what restored us.

So were you able to ask on the support forum, then? Because from my understanding, I seem to recall someone saying that they are technically strict on giving backups to administrators.

Forumotion does not give out the database as a download file. The backups are virtual backups which are stored most likely on separate servers, but can't be downloaded.

Yes the support forum had revived the forum to an older backup, but what was weird was when I did it, everything was restored, but the homepage still showed everything deleted. it was weird.

That is weird. I don't even know what to say to that one.

I suggest changing providers

Actually, that would be my suggestion too. Forumotion was one of my first hosts as well when I started running forums, but it doesn't sound like they've improved a whole lot now compared to when I used them three years ago, so I would suggest either switching to advanced hosting ASAP, where you'll have more control over your forum, or if you must stay with free hosts, get a better free host than Forumotion. If you're after suggestions on what host to use, ProPHPBB is very good.

Sorry but I just can't leave this Forum right now and start a new one.

Well, at least write up some good guidelines as far as safety measures and passwords that not only your staff can follow, but also your members if nothing else. Nothing is worse than having a Forumotion forum hacked, and unfortunately, that happens all too often during the summer months. I would especially recommend having your staff and members change their passwords often. On a free hosted forum as strict as Forumotion, that's probably the safest way to keep yourselves safe. If you have trouble coming up with decent length passwords, use the Forgot My Password link often or one of my favorite sites to use is http://www.strongpasswordgenerator.com I believe it is. Very helpful site and you can choose how long you want your passwords to be.
