Flame war

A flame war is not really common in forums but it's not rare either. When there is a flame war in your forum, how do you resolve it peacefully? Sometimes it cannot be avoided to suspend erring members particularly the provokers. But we also have to understand that emotions can be high even in online activities that can lead to acts that are tantamount to quarreling. Maybe the warring parties can be informed if the issue via private messages to avoid embarrassment.

Moderation shouldn't have let one evolve to begin with, if they're active enough.

We've never had a flame war in our almost 6 years, even though the greatest niche we support is quite a dramatic one.

I got into it with a member on my adult site. I ended up deleting the entire thread and we "agreed to disagree". lol

I'll stop a flame war before it starts, but I've never had an issue. My members are pretty chill.

I think one has to be sure of what they have as an argument is very different from a flame war though they may look similar in nature and appearance. An argument is people in disagreement even an intense disagreement who are using facts to support their belief and that's fine. Flame wars on the other hand are when the argument has just devolved into hurling insults back and forth and that's not fine because it is not productive to let that go on for anyone. I personally would shut down a flame war if I had the power to do so but I don't mind arguments going on as it's healthy for such arguments to be allowed to run their course and get settled rather then trying to suppress them because they interfere with what you think should or shouldn't happen on a board. Arguments that aren't allowed to run their course end up as flame wars which will never end until you are forced to throw someone out and that's a real shame especially when it was possible to resolve the issue and keep both parties on the board if it was handled properly.
