What are some fonts that are best for websites and design? Which ones should really be avoided?

Wingdings are the only font I recommend to any budding webmaster.

On a real note, I love Myriad Pro. My real life resume is in Myriad Pro.

Atm I really like proxima nova soft for headings and lato for regular text

My basic rule of thumb is for website content (i.e: body text) fonts always stick with a Sans-serif font as they are the easiest to read on any screen. There are some pretty good free Sans-serif fonts out there. For headings and others you can get creative with Display or Serif fonts.

I tend to use georgia and lemon but I don't have a specific favorite. Depending on what I am doing I tend to use a font which I feel might fit best

In my opinion, Open Sans and Montserrat are the best Google fonts

Seems like the rule of thumb in school was to never use Comic Sans MS. 😛

That's because it got overused and was used in instances that it didn't fit the purpose of the graphic or the company.

I typically go for fonts that are easily readable. They have to have a really neat and clean appearance. If they aren't then I won't bother using them.

Never! Comic Sans is the best font and I will continue to defend it! As for a font I don't like being used, Times New Roman. It's too old looking imo. I don't think I've seen a site use it in a while, but I don't recommend using it.

I do like Oswald or something basic like Arial, never Comic Sans MS though, I don't think I've ever seen a use for it where it actually looks good

I like Trebuchet MS. I tend to use it the most. A font has to be easy to read. I don't care for those that mimic calligraphy. When it's a line, that's okay but not trying to read an entire paragraph with it being used.

Given that I use Photoshop quite a lot for various things connected to my message boards, I've become a bit of a font freak over the last few years. IN fact I've just upgraded my PC tower last week so I've had tore-install them all!

Some picks are:

Modern - Tommy Hillfiger, Dolce Vita

Sci-Fi - good old classics like Neuropol and Nasalization

90's gaming - neon overdrive and Night Machine

When in doubt, always use Comic Sans.

I think the font that one should use heavily depends on the topic and scope of the site. Generally, I think sans serif fonts look nicer than serif fonts for web design.
