What do you do about this? Do you let them return as a member? Do you let them return as staff? Or don't bring them back at all. I usually never bring them back because they could do this thing again and when your banned you shouldn't come back.

I will rarely let them back. If it was over a year, I will email them. They can tell me why I should let them back if I say yes, they will start as a staff member on moderation queue.

Depends. Let's take Light, for example, who banned one of my other admins, changed her username and profile details to... uh, negative things, and deleted all of her posts. (several hundred)

I am never, ever going to bring him back. Not even as a regular member, let alone a staff member.

Maybe? It just kind of depends on what they did to get themselves banned. If it was something minor like they got into a little fight with another admin and took it too far and got themselves banned I might let them back as a member.

If I let them back as a staff member, they would have limited access to some things just so they can't ruin the forum for 'revenge' or something.

Forgive? Sure. Holding grudges is exhausting. I won't ever forget though. When I ban staff members (or even regular members) it is for a good reason. Staff members who abuse their powers and/or are argumentative are not welcomed to be part of the staff team again.

In my opinion being a staff member is a privilege and since everyone is volunteering their time I don't think there's any point in being antagonistic. If they can't practice being diplomatic when handling certain situations then there is no sense in keeping them as staff and it would be absurd to let them be staff again.

If they do return as a regular member and are clearly positively contributing to the community then I may consider rehiring them - however, it would be unlikely because I would expect them to continue to be that way for a long time before I even consider them letting them be part of the staff team again.

It depends on why and who they are, I'm with Sharon on this one, forgive, yes forget, never.

An admin member went ape on our forum over a comment that was totally misread, and innocent, the member would not communicate, or discuss the matter at all, the member removed 1500, posts and destroyed another 150, by replacing the text with smiley icons, and did a similar thing on our promo page on our hosts site with smillies.

Then proceeded to label me in no uncertain terms on our network, send abusive emails to me and on a couple of occasion, nasty phone calls. The last email I received, the member wished that I would have a heart attack.

That member rejoined 3 times, as a normal member, each time the user had a different email and IP, and reaped havoc each time, now if you are banned on my forum, you are given one chance to be a part of the forum, (depending on why they were banned), with very basic rights only, but definitely not as a staff member.

If they contribute, and follow site rules they stay, other than that, it's a permanent ban.

I don't think I've ever banned a staff member before, at least on my forum. 😛 But with enough time, though, I think anyone who has been banned can be redeemed. They have to work for it, though, there's no question about that.

Everyone deserves a second chance. If someone is truly sorry, I will always consider unbanning him/her.

I've been there and done that many, many times. Sadly, some people will never change.

After unbanning a long-time troublemaker recently, I randomly locked him out of accessing his own account. He's said that he will not follow our rules, and that he will talk sh*t to other members as he liked. How about...no.

Same here. It really depends on the incident in question. If it was something minor, heck I'll gladly add them back and forgive them, but something major or something that's just downright unforgivable, well, I like to play those situations by ear. If they can promise me they'll behave this time around, and actually do it, then I'll consider giving them another try. However, if they mess up again, they could be gone for good.

I've never had to ban a staff member before. Demotions sure - but it never got so bad to have to ban them. I honestly would never bring back a banned staff member. I would let them at least be a member on the forum later on once issues were discussed and forgiven. I'm a very forgiving person - but if they did something bad enough to be banned then I probably wouldn't give them the option to be staff again.

I have banned staff members on Forum Promotion before, simply because their infraction was almost unforgivable. There were many bans that are overturned in the future because I'm also a really big believer in second chances.

I think that many cases, staff can come back to the community, or even the team, under the right circumstances. We only have a few infractions on the staff team here that will get you permanently banned and removed from the community, but you've gotta be pretty stupid to do them. 😛

So to answer the question: yes, I believe in second chances!

Staff that messes up would likely be stripped of any powers and demoted as a first step, for them to actually be outright banned it has to be bad.

If it was bad enough to warrant a direct ban, I'd probably not want them back at all. I'm not one to be impossible though if they come asking politely if they could come back as members I'd at least consider it, and if I let them back I'd keep an extra eye on them.

So far I have not had a reason to demote or ban any staff though, so hard to say exactly would would go down if the time comes.

Hmm, I've forgiven regular members and unbanned their accounts before, but I don't think I've ever banned a staff'er.

I suppose they could come back as a regular member (depending on what happened), but their time on the staff team would be done.

I would struggle to let them back as a member let alone staff, because they obviously abused their position which could have harmed the reputation of the forum. If they were banned then I would never allow them to become staff again.
