How did you launch your forum? I got an advice from one website designer about launching a forum. That it is best to form a group before officially launching. The group should be related to the forum's theme. For example, your forum is about sports then gather people you know who are interested in the topic. Invite them to help you with your new forum. If there are at least 6 good posters when you launch, your forum will have a semblance of a beehive. It will look dynamic and appealing to newbies.

I launched with two team members 🙂

And started off since then. Even then I did most of the work and hard to bickered if others be active

Ohh great idea! I was just asking this the other day how to kickstart a new forum! One suggestion was piggy backing off the success of another or other similar forums with a link in your sig. Or if you can create a post about it on those forums that would help too but you better make sure it's in the right place and is allowed. But this is a good idea, the group idea I mean. I guess you could start the group first and then promote it, get thousands of members for it, real ones all actually using it. Then make the new forums for it and announce it on that group. Since those are real users of it and they like it, they will probably join your forums then. But you should do other forum promotion things to promote it as well. Facebook ads is another good way to promote new forums. Cheap as chips too! 🙂

it is a good idea, try it

Finding 3 or 4 people to post on here (volunteers, post exchanges) isn't difficult and on top of that, you can always hire writers. However, though, while it's cool to have a lot of newbies, at least 3 people well versed in the forum's topic are needed to give the forum some legitimacy - assuming it's not a general discussion forum.

Yes, this is a good idea. And if you can't find enough people or friends for your group you can always set up a few long-term post exchanges with people.

This is exactly what we did! We were able to start with 50 registered, quality, posters in the first 5 days!

I've always launched them alone, minus the new one and one other. It never occurred to me to get staff - seeing as new stuff won't get any traffic.

My friend started his forum with half a dozen like minded people. It was a good tactic. He got some good moderators and they're still active on the forum 13 years later.

I am starting mine by doing most of the posting but this time I am enlisting my existing site users (in other niches) to do the posting for me. I am kind of building my own PostLoop. I hope it works!

As someone that is independent, I lean towards starting and managing projects on my own. I don't need people to waste my time that isn't as interested in my project as I am.

If you have any plans on starting a successful forum you should be capable of starting it by yourself. Having friends to assist you is just an extra.

I really want to do this with music related stuff - but it's tough to gain supporters, even among musicians on this forum! Anyway, the only solution left - is just to pay a bunch of musicians. However, though, you can't find them, with the exception of maybe guitarists (I'm mainly a drummer) on Postloop and The Forum Wheel.

I like everything in your initial post. Technically I've launched my forum but I may go after getting some folks still.

Yeah, I agree it is difficult to start a forum without people there to help build content. But there are rewards either way you look at it. Rewards for working at alone, means you learn what it takes to start the forum without help from people who are working with you. On the other hand, if you have people working with you, content and other items can get put up much quicker, and might help get over the starters hump of finding and advertising to the right people.

I do not own a forum, however, I did try launching a forum in the pas. Because of my limited skills in customizing forum scrupts I aborted the idea. I tried MyBB and later changed to SMF. I invited friends and family to join, however, due to lack of activities and members, the forum was dead long before it was fully active. I am again thinking about creating a forum. I have a domain which I think will be great name for a forum on General discussion. I liked the OP's idea about forming a group.

Yeah, forming a Facebook group is a good idea - because that's where everybody is - like it or not. However, you can gradually wean them into your forum or blog.

Well, it's a very good idea to have a group of people with common interest to rally together and set up a good forum. With everything being equal, this looks functional but where there is going to be a hitch with the forum would be on sharing the forum's proceeds.

Forming a group before launching a forum is a good idea. It will really help a forum get good exposure.
