Forum Advertising For Dummies!

If you charged for this I bet anything, people would buy!

I've never seen a guide half this detailed...The links are also invaluable.

{As for me, most people my age have more of a life so they don't spend so much time on internet forums XD}

He he. It's 97,362 characters already. o.o It's not even a real version yet. I'll probably have over 700,000 characters by the time I'm done with it.

Not something I'd sell though. I like to help out my fellow admins out there. ๐Ÿ˜‰ This is something that will forever remain free.

Thanks for the compliments gent. ๐Ÿ™‚ Rep to you.

Thanks KMRock and Papaya for the awesome feedback. ๐Ÿ˜€

I hope this guide can continue to help you gents as it continues to expand and upgrade. :great:

Someone should sticky this!!

Very kind of you to just offer this for free, too. It's better than a lot of stuff you'd normally have to pay for.

If I can think of anything to offer up from my angle of things {my experience with forums in general} I'll be sure to yap about it on this thread. But you do seem to have already covered it!

Found this, though...

"I've never seen a single free forum get more than 3,000 members. "

http://warriorcatsarpg.proboards.com

Lack of control is a large issue with free forum hosts, but on the flip side, Proboards, as much as everyone gripes about them and very few take them seriously, has a good customer service help forum available, that I've gone to numerous times for help. Their large site size and power, backed by their money, cushions our forum from things like most hack attempts, and so far, we have never run out of space. In return though, we don't make any money off our site. That's okay with me, because money was never my objective on a game forum, fun is. But it'd be an issue for anyone trying to make money off their message board obviously.

He he. ^.^ Don't know about all that. But I'll probably be updating it so much, a sticky might not even be necessary.

Feel free, I love to get opinions and suggestions. Just makes the guide all the better.

Very nice. I honestly don't see free forums reach that status, you've done very well on it.

Mind if I add that quote to the Guide? Full credits and quote status given to you of course.

Wow I can't wait. You should have a link for donations or something dude! Nice work!

Sure, you're free to quote me there. =) It'd be an honour!

I could also drone on and on about my many experiences over the past 11 years on message boards. Things like good rules, bad rules, ugly rules, the shit that happens when no one is moderating it, {Regardless of your forum members' ages!}shaping the tone and attitude of your forum, how important monitoring the stats of your forum are{Best way by far to catch waning activity early; otherwise, you actually might not realise it until it's serious} and more. Not that I know everything--far from it--but 11 years of forum heaven and forum hell have taught me a few things.

Nice, but I have a suggestion. Put in something about the different types of forum software (vBulletin, phpBB, SMF, AEF, MyBB). It will help people choose what is right for them.

I also applaud how you said that promotion forums don't get you active members. For the most part this is true.

He he, actually the next expansion to my guide...can probably work that out. Thanks for the permissions.

EDIT:
Aaaand quoted and credited. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I stuck the quote in the section on Free Forums, at Pro Boards (which I've added to the list) And you're in the honorary list of credits.
:great:

Very curious you say that. Actually, the next version/expansion of this guide is going to include both descriptions and choosing forum software, along with forum genre.

Thanks for the feedback mate. ๐Ÿ˜‰

thanks!! I'll probably just wait till that next part of your guide comes out and read it over then see what I can think of that wasn't mentioned. I'm glad to lend my help.

Actually, I'm thinking more in the line of an interview for Version 0.3.0

And on a note gents! Version 0.2.5 is now released. It's 0.2.5 because I couldn't finish the other section up today. ๐Ÿ˜› 0.3.0 is scheduled to be released on Tuesday (aka, tomorrow or today based on your time zone)

~NEWLY ADDED~
-Now features a detailed section on forum software.
-Fixed a few grammar mistakes.

Excellent work there Michael. +rep.

~ now comes the sleeping part, humans just don't spend 6 hours typing up a manual ๐Ÿ˜›

Well written and very accurate.

He he. ^.^ Yeah, I went to bed pretty quickly after releasing this guide.

Thanks a billion for the +Rep and feedback gent. ๐Ÿ˜‰ And this guide is expanding, and will probably keep expanding for months. So check back sometimes.

Thanks again. ๐Ÿ˜€

Do you know what you will be adding in the future releases, I am eagerly awaiting them ๐Ÿ˜€

I can safely say the next version is going to definitely include interviews and some other stuff ๐Ÿ˜€

EDIT: @Pimped
Hey, thanks mate. ๐Ÿ˜€

Next release is scheduled to be tomorrow, and on Forum Genre. In fact, I even got something special planned where I am interviewing successful admins of different forum genres to be placed in the sections.

It won't be added in with the official release, but will come...need some more time to interview other people. Already interviewed Nathan for Promotion Forums though, so his interview will be released tomorrow. ๐Ÿ˜€

EDIT:
He he. ^.^ Nathan got here before me. Props to ya gent. ๐Ÿ˜€
