I can never start a popular site.. what would everyone like to see in a forum? discussion? gaming? promotional?

How long do you stick with your forum? The problem is that it takes many many months (if not years!) to make an active forum. All you need to do is make 1 site, put all your effort into it and promote it and just stick with it. This forum didn't grow this size in a week or a month.

ive been with my forum since about a year and we dont have any active members.

As Fowler said, you need to be able to have the time and effort to create a forum. If you go with something unique such as member's blog's, food, sport's & leisure or something that has not yet been used around for a bit, only unique is the best.

What is your forum about? Do you have a link (I'm probably just being blind and missing it!)

What's your forum about?

Nowadays, you can't just throw together a forum and expect people to join. Even putting a lot of effort into it can't guarantee you many visitors. You have to be very original and offer something that no other forum in your genre offers, but that's easier said than done because there's so many of them. Believe me, I know.

you can start anything you like or you are interested in, but it will only succeed if you stick to it for a long time and put effort into it. also you need a good dedicated team to make it succefull

Exactly. I have learned this lesson the hard way. For 2 years I have been trying to do a forum, and my problem was I spent so much time on free hosts, which is basically a no-no, unless you are a beginner at foruming, of course. I knew I could be doing one better. And I did and am thankful for it.

Well, what 'kind' of RP is it? :S To be honest, the only RP sites I've ever been interested in are Pokemon ones. *Shrug*

Looking at your forum (ignoring the fact that it's remotely-hosted), there aren't many topics there. The one mistake many new people make in starting up a forum is just that. They're not making very many topics to start off with. Throw in some threads just so that even guys like us can at least post in it to make it look at least somewhat active. I won't get into the looks of the forum quite yet, but hope that helps.

RPG forums...not the best for having large communities. And you might want to do what I did:

I posted everywhere with every thing I can possibly find.

For example, you have several areas without posts. Fix that fast. If you can't, merge areas until all areas have one or more topics.

This will fix something at least.
Following this, it's all tricks depending on the nature of your community.

I remember that being one of my biggest mistakes. I would open a forum and then expect people to start coming in and making posts and what not. Then I learned the hard way that that's not how it works. Fortunatley, there's a lot of things I've learned the hard way in the 2 years I've been trying to do this.

Oh, definitely. I'm sure most of us made that mistake if they weren't taught otherwise.

If you enjoy roleplaying then go with an RPG, but only if you really love it. It's going to be a labour of love most likely. RPGs are hard to get off the ground.

Otherwise, before you start a board make sure it will have something no one else already isn't doing and doing better.
