What's the difference between www.mydomain.com/forum to forum.mydomain.com?

/forum is common for Xenforo although with edits can be made through MyBB, which is helpful for SEO, as for forum.mydomain.com when I think of that I think of forums with a blog/homepage etc.

IPS have that option for both also, something to do with having the forum in front where the traffic visits first then you have WordPress or blog linked and install into the server also.

It's not a file structure difference, it's a domain/sub domain difference.
