Do you offer a blog or forum FAQ page where the most commonly asked questions are answered? For instance, on your forum, you might link to a thread which covers all site rules as well as details on how to sign up for the forum and other points of interest, including how to apply for staff member positions. Do you use this idea for your forum?
Sometimes I planned to have one. I think it's cool to have a section or few threads dedicated to cover FAQs and guidelines/tutorials on how to use some features of the forum, since usually forum's default FAQs is not clear enough. But I was always too lazy to do that, haha. Pretty sure it will be helpful, if members learn to read and can easily access those articles.
I have had a few, mainly in the FAQ's we had how to become a staff member, how to post, how they can change their usernames, etc. Everything else was left up to the help docs, and we eventually gave up on the FAQ and just added everything into the help docs themselves, it gave them a little more purpose.
Currently, there is no FAQ, but instead there is a Guide for new members which is veru useful (and a member created it!). Explains most about ways to modify your profile and other aspects of the community.
It depends on how extensive the forum is? On my harry potter forum, I have an extensive user guide and a very extensive staff guide. But, the site itself has a lot of elements that need to be explained and therefore, the FAQ or Student Guidelines/Staff Guidelines were built. Otherwise, unless people start asking the same questions over and over, I don't usually use FAQs
I think a F&Q topic stuck or made as part of a Welcome stickied announcement is quite a good idea. It does have to be well maintained by the forum administrators though. If a user asks a question it should be added to the first topic and an answer added. So it requires work but it does help.
