Does anyone here have an opinion on long domain names?
Eg.
www.myforum.freefourms.org
^^^^
If the forum was well made would you still join?
Or
Would you have more insentive of joining a forum with a short domain name?

When it comes to joining it doesn't affect me but when it comes to revisiting i would tend to return again to a forum if it has a shorter URL as i usually try to remember domains and if i forget the domain then i don't return. Especially if the name was something complicated which makes it hard to even remember the name, not counting the host name and so on that you also have to remember.

I agree with fowler, A longer Domain name does not determine whether i join a site, but it might determine whether i revisit or not, If the domain was 1 word but still quite long then it would be easy to remember, whether its long or not, but when you start adding other words it will become hard to remember.

I guess I'm picky, but seeing a long domain name pretty much makes me close the window. I rarely click free forum sites when I see the long link.

I don't mind it but mainly, free linked forums are either bare or ran by inexperienced Admins. I always look at a forum though, regardless of the URL. Might be the most active forum in the world on that long domain after all.

Lucky i go my domain changed then -😉-
I am fairly inexperienced Traygon. But i'm looking to get better experience.
What do you think of my job so far ~rolleyes~

Thanks for the opinions guy's!

I dont mind it at all. Shorter urls are easier to remember, but there's always bookmarks for places with longer names. I wouldnt want to miss out on a decent place because I didnt like how long the link was.

Urls don't particularly alter my decision on a forum. If it is well put together, then it doesn't matter.

That's what bookmarking is for.

you can get domains like .tk or .co.nr free to shorten your domain. I think it would be best to go with the best host you can get.

I've always found that a good domain name will do you a lot of favours, firstly in terms of stickability and thirdly the overall look of your site.

From past experience, the minute someone sees ".freeforums.org" or ".myfreeforumhost" etc.. there's immediately a thought of doubt, and here's why. People are reluctant to join free forums...everyone knows that a free forum can take minutes to set up, and what's to say that the Admin is fully serious about their forum. The thing with free forums is that there is no loss to the Administrator, there is no fee for the domain name, no hosting cost and most Admins on Free hosts are happy to "not" pay to have a few ads show up on their site. Because there's no loss to them, many aren't bothered if the forum fails and will quite happily pack their bags and close down the board if things don't go quite as well as first anticipated. So, there's reason 1 to get a good domain name...to cover up the fact you're a free forum.

Secondly, having a good domain name will not only make it easier to promote your site, but it will improve stickibility. How? because it will make your forum easy to access. Ideally you want a short domain name with as few syllables as possible....for example "ps3forums.com" is going to be much easier to access than "ps3-forums-for-ever-woot.com". If people are given a short, snappy domain name they're going to be likely to remember it.

Finally, it looks professional. Enough said.

Have a look at this article. It helped me a great deal when making the transition between being a regular internet noobie and a website owner.

Hope it works for you too ~smile~
