Does anyone really think a forum is going to work on regular hosting, not just an advanced VPS plan? How about multiple forums?

In what ways can memory be conserved without sacrificing the forum quality?

if you have over 4GB and small then you are good. having 16GB will be better

I agree with Empire. 4GB is too small and won't be able to run properly/correctly. However on 16GB it will run a lot faster and smoother.

I think that "regular" hosting does & will work for small-medium forums. Especially when your forum is just starting up you don't need a huge amount of GB space. There are a lot of different plans out there on shared hosting providers that can suit your needs. Large forums may like the advanced options that VPS provides and having more control.

I don't think you guys know how RAM works lol if you have more memory than is utilized (usually less than 512MB peak for a medium-traffic forum, and around 128MB peak for small), you'll get absolutely no performance increase by adding more. Performance only takes a hit when you've maxed your RAM's capacity, which is when the excess starts getting written to the storage drives (HDD or SSD). Storage drives are a lot slower because they're non-volatile, which is entirely why memory exists.

In computing, memory isn't related to storage.

Also it comes down to the script, some are better than others when it comes to resources usage.

4 forums with quite a bit of posting seem to take up 50 percent memory of 30 USD/mo VPS setup. Of course, though, including 500 pdf and 500 midi files.

Wouldn't have more then 4 forums on one VPS, depending on what VPS you have. Shared hosting is good for one board, I have two websites on one server and I sometimes feels and see the difference. the secound website doesn't get any traffic anyway and using it for testing
