Name of Forum: Forum Nintendo
Forum Link: Forum-N.com
Type of Review ( Quick Review / Forum Review ): Quick Review
Date Forum Opened: September 22, 2004 - server movement & new forum started October 20, 2008
Demo Account for reviewer (Supplied by requester): Not really needed, but if you want one ID: 'test' and PW: 'test'
Additional Notes: My Statcounter link. I do plan on requesting a Full Forum Review in the near future - it's hard to find sites that actually do reviews, I'm glad you guys do them. n_n

Also: most of the members live on the East Coast of the US, so the forum is most active between 4 and 10pm EST... its more dead the rest of the day compared to then.

Also(2): The affiliates script at the bottom of each page I haven't tested in all browsers - its made to be used with firefox.

Also(3): Some of the skins need updated. I mainly only make changes to the default skin, and not the others, seeing as nearly all of my users use the default.

Hi, and welcome to Forum Promotion! I'm a hardcore Nintendo fan, so looking forward to this review. I'll try and have this completed for you by this evening.

I see you've added a few updates. And we only review the default skin. Cause you want to know what guests think of the forum, which is how we handle quick reviews.

I'm fixing to get started on this ... it's been a busy friday for me.

Also, going to register, I already like the forum so far.

Cool - hey if it makes your job easier, bump this up to the Full Forum Review, that way I wont be requesting another review in a few days. I should have enough posts and points now for one. I was going to request the full forum review after the quick review - but yeah. Its up to you which you would like to do.

No rush on the review either. 😉

Best to just get a quick, so you can see some suggestions and things to work on, then after 2 weeks, you can request a full review, and get a better score based on suggestions and improvements from your quick review.

I'll wait for you to reply, wether you want the QR or FR ... just let me know soon.

Eh 2 reviews is better than one I guess. Just do the quick for now and Ill get the full later. (Although I think we'd do fine on the full review as of now)

I'm just getting back on, been a busy weekend. I'll just go ahead and give you the full review, and no charge since you've waited long enough for this. I'll have this by later tonight.

Your Forum Review

First Impressions & Appearance - (Out of 20)

Immediately logging on the site, and just skimming around, I am thoroughly impressed. The style and layout are fantastic. Great choice of colors on the template. The banner is bright and gorgeous, which is what you expect from anything Nintendo Related. Though, I really do have a problem with the images covering the text in the banner. It's creative, but not a good idea to block the forum title in your banner.

The background image is great; but , only 50% of it. You really need to find a way to add something different on the right side of the forum background. Samus' leg, Kirby's belly, and Pikachu's ear just looks really awful over there.

I have never seen better board icons perfectly fitted for a forum before. Ususally I always have to nit pick on most forums on/off icons, but yours are amazing. The coin blocks, which are very synonymous to any Ninetendo fan, are just perfect.

Site Layout - (Out of 20)

I do have several issues with the forum layout, especially being a huge nintendo gaming fan, myself. Let me start from the top, The Bulletin Board. Everything really seems layed out well in this section. My only complaint is the Nintendo Store. For one, it should probably be titled, The Forum Nintendo Store; since it is for the forum, and not the actual nintendo store. Also, I don't like it's location. I think it would probably be best suited as a sub-board in one of the sections; or maybe just moved down below, and I would suggest underneath the Spam board.

Now, here's my griping of the layout. The Nintendo sections. You actually have more sections in the "Other Gaming" sections, that the actual nintendo section. Everything in these section are kinda messy. There's no organization. And, by that, I mean why aren't there sections for Nintendo based franshises? If I want to find a particular game to talk about, I have to search through a load of pages just to find it. You really need to consider either a section for popular nintendo gaming franchises, oir add gaming franchises as sub-boards under their respective systems, Wii & DS.

Now, don't go crazy on adding every single title. Just geta feel for the series' you know will be most talked about. You already know the most popular ones will be, mario, metroid, zelda, pokemon, smash bros, animal crossing, etc. This will actually spark more interests in your Ninetendo sections, cause it will allow so much more freedom on talking about certain franchises, and not just one topic dedicated to a game.

Just to compare, I run a brawl forum. I have more brawl sections than any other section on the forum. And that's just ONE game. You have the complete Nintendo Universe of games at your disposal. And, another thing that bothers me, is there's nowhere to hook up with members to play games on wifi ... which is a huge selling point for any nintendo forum ... getting members connected.

For the General Games sections. I honestly think you should combine the General Gaming & Current Consoles sections. Cause when looking through current consoles; it's mostly talking about games on other consoles, which defeats the purpose of General Gaming. My solution. Again, use sub-boards. Make different sub-boards for different consoles. So gamer talk will be more organized when a member wants to discuss a game from a particular console.

The rest of the forum is layed out very well. And each section belongs exactly where it should. Though, the category, Irrelevance" probably isn't the best choice of words for that section. everything else has "Discussions" in the title, so why not something like, "Member Discussions" ; but Irrelevance just makes that section sound like those sections don't belong.

Statistics and Activity - (Out of 20)

Considering your forum had to completely start over, your current stats are impressive. I couldn't imagine how huge the sats would be right now if all the previous stats were able to be tranferred. The only thing though, is your forum didn't just start in 2008. By that, I mean you didn't just think it up, then have to build it's reputation from scratch. You had a 4 year build up for it's new foundation, and active loyal members from the previous forum were already set for when this forum got up and running. But still, the stats are impressive for only being opened for one year.

Staff Moderation - (Out of 20)

Oh, wow! 5 administartors? I had to look and refresh a few times to make sure that was accurate, and not a glitch. Seriously, your forum only calls for 1, maybe 2 admins on the forum. I DO understand how this happened. The prevuious forum must have been huge, and you needed those numbers when converting to the new forum. But it just makes your forum look too governed. You need less admins, and more mods.

Do all of these admins really have admin responsibilties? Or are they just close friends who help moderate the forum. You need about 3 of these admins removed from the rank, and placed as a moderator. 8 staff members is already pushing it. But maybe there's a reason for all the staff.

Oh, lord. Doing a little more research. You have an admin, Linkums, who in 1 entire year, has spent a total of 34 hours on the forum. In one year, has only 266 posts. And reading his portal page

Ahoy. I'm the guy that originally started Forum Nintendo back on Invisionfree. Now I mostly do my own thing and just visit for fun, maybe help occasionally.
^^ This has got to change, very soon. He needs to let go if he doesn't plan on actually working for the forum's progression. He is obviously a good friend of yours, and you don't want to hurt is feelings.

REMOVE Linkums, SW:Crimson, and SW:The Thief from your admin and staff team. They are not there for your forum; seems more like a staff rank is all. D2K is a great admin from what I can tell. You and him are all the admins you need.

I have never spent this much time on a forum's staff team when reviewing. You just have to think about it, once you read what I am saying. It does suck to hurt friends' feelings, but you have to think about the forum. You probably have better members more fitting for the mod team; not 3 admins who don't get involved. A FULL year on the forum, and they barely post. They average between 200-300 posts.

Spelling/Grammar & Professionalism - (Out of 20)

Everything looks great throughout your index page. Very good use of grammar, spelling, and clever wording for board titles and descriptions ... all except for that category title i mentioned above.

Final Remarks:

The admin team needs serious re-adjustments. Ask anyone from here, they will agree. Also, your forum needs more nintendo related content. There are only 3 section that have to do with nintendo, It almost feels like Nintendo was the main goal of the forum, but more sections got added for off-topic discussion ... but nothing added to spice up the nintendo sections.

Your forum would have had an amazing score, up in the 90's, if not for the really bad choices for the current staff members.

What was most liked about the website/forums:

The forum look and layout. It's a great theme that will attract any fan of the Nintendo comapny.

What was disliked most about the website/forums:

The insane number of admins, and 3 of them that almost have nothing to do with the forum. This issue needs to be resolved, I have already stressed and presented my case on this issue. It's time for those admins to let go, so the forum and staff team can move forward.

Another thing, I even posted a topin on the forum about this one. That there are no toption to add any Wii FCs, or game FC's in the profiles. But for some reason, Xbox Live gamertags are welcomed. That really needs to be addressed.

How could I get you (The Reviewer) to join my website?

Didn't take me long, being a huge nintendo fan myself. And jusging by the activity, doesn't take many others long to decide to join and be active. It is a good forum with alot of potential. Looking forward to beuing a member on there.

Very interesting review! But oh boy do I have comments! I think if you knew some of my reasoning for things beforehand the score would have been a bit higher, but I'll definitely take some of your criticism into account and make some changes on my site. I will definitely be requesting another review in the future!

I really do have a problem with the images covering the text in the banner. It's creative, but not a good idea to block the forum title in your banner.

I rotate the banner out, Id say on average once every 1-2 weeks to keep things from getting stale. This past summer, we held a banner contest and had so many good entries, I didn't want to just use one. Here's a gallery displaying all of the banners we've got.

The background image is great; but , only 50% of it. You really need to find a way to add something different on the right side of the forum background. Samus' leg, Kirby's belly, and Pikachu's ear just looks really awful over there.

I do realize this. I had started a background banner contest a little over a month ago, but closed it seeing as no one was noticing the thread. I do have intentions of re-making the thread before the end of the year, since the background for people on higher resolution screens looks bad. (As a side note, this is what it looks like for me:

Regarding comments on Site Layout

When we remade the new forum, we basically copied the layout straight from the old site, which would be probably ideal for your liking, considering we had it basically as you described we should. I didn't want to change it, but we had an issue where a lot of the more specific nintendo boards were quite dead, and weren't even getting used, even after a few months of the forum being open! D2K had suggested the current layout and after some discussion and tweaking, we changed it because we thought it would make better use of what forums people wanted to post in. (We had, and still do have full intentions of re-dividing the Nintendo Discussion board up into smaller sub-sections like we had before at some point in the future.)

Just to compare, I run a brawl forum. I have more brawl sections than any other section on the forum. And that's just ONE game.
I guess this is where we may have a disagreement. I think the board index should be as to the point as possible. What I mean is, I don't like having such a huge number of forums/sub forums that it takes me a long time to scroll down the page. I think having 10-15 forums on your board index each with a large number of topics/posts looks much better than having 15-30 and each only having ~1k posts.

there's nowhere to hook up with members to play games on wifi ... which is a huge selling point for any nintendo forum ... getting members connected.

As I said before, Im limited in my coding abilities, and can't do it until I find someone. Heck, on the old forum, we even had a "Nintendo Wifi" board, specifically for sharing FC's and letting people set up wifi matches and whatnot. That forum itself had almost 7,500 posts before we moved.

The reason I dont have that section now is because it wasn't active. When the DS first came out, we had a huge flood of people coming posting ACWW, MKDS, and MPH friend codes... but see, that has sort of died off. Nintendo isn't producing huge games with multiplayer aspects for the DS, and Wii anymore. (Yeah, brawl, but what else... not much.)

Heh, it really sucks we couldnt get the old database moved to the new site. :shake:

Do all of these admins really have admin responsibilties?

Yes, actually. Crimson helped me install the forum software, and has helped somewhat with coding things around the site. Linkums was the founder of the site, and he wouldn't have a problem if I moved him to retired staff, but I keep him on the admin team in case of emergencies... (Ill touch on this later.) Thief runs a TF2 clan off the server, so he needs admin access because of that - not to mention he is relatively active as an admin, AND has control of the domain name; gotta keep him happy, seeing as he controls the domain... which is the only thing that holds any value on the site. When the official Nsider forums closed, Nsider2 started up and we had an offer for around $3k just for the domain -- because of its rank on google. Obviously we said no. (I don't want to make it sound like Im appeasing him, Im not. We're pretty good friends Id say.)

D2k was my best admin. As far as I can tell he left the forum about a month and a half ago... which is rather unfortunate. I'm actually going to hire someone in his place shortly.

Emergencies... yeah. There are a few instances which I can think of that would require as much staff as I currently have - maybe even more. My main reason is simply this: each of the staff members is on the site at a different point in the day. D2k was on at odd hours of the morning (2-7am) for me, thief and crimson are usually most active before lunch. Id like to have at least one person with admin access on at most points throughout the day in case something would come up.

[Story] - one time we had an attack on the site where someone set up some sort of a bot to make registrations and post 2 new topics with each account. I have no idea how it was done, but we had easily 500 registrations by this attacker in under 10 minutes - thats 1000 topics that needed tended to in a 10 minute period. Obviously it was an extreme circumstance, but we've had other instances in the past where I fully used all of the staff members simultaneously.

I don't see any harm in having 5 - soon to be 6 admins and 3 mods for a forum with over 500 members - (and if you'd like to include stats from the old site, its well over 2,600 members.)

It's no problem, there's always a story behind the background; and it's understandible. Your forum is great, I had at least a 90 in my sights for you, until I got to your staff team. It doesn't matter the reasoning, any reviewer will see that as a bad sign with so many admins. If they're not going to be active, they could at least have some kinda mod rank, but so many admins is not necessary.

Plus, you got the review from 2 different perspectives. A new comer to the site ( so you can hear at least one guests' outlook ) and a very, very diehard nintendo fan.

Honestly, I was pumped when I started reviewing and joined. But there were issues that needed to be addressed. Especially when i wanted to talk about my favorite series and games, but couldn't find anything immediately. I at least ecpected a few clickable sub-boards for at least the mario & zelda series.

Trust me, this wasn't about downing your forum. I coulda just sugar coated and been on my way. But I spent about 3-4 hours on that one, cause I really do want your forum to be better than ever. You've got a great, long lasting community. It's just most who look for a console gaming forum, are looking for more depth of discssions on their favorite console.

Don't worry, though, it's just my own opinion. Your forum is doing great. just, anything now matter how good it is, can always improve. 🙂
