Hello everyone, i am using MyBB for my website. And i see many spammers signing in. Eventhough i have the re-captcha and Q&A. I like to know is there any software which is good against spammers. I know MyBB is prone to spammers and we can do little things to avoid them. But i don't think we can stop them effectively.

Does any paid software has good spam protection?

IPB has a far more advanced spam protection if set up correctly, but even they advise several paid spam protection services. Don’t know which one out of my head, would need to login to my ACP.

First, you should know that getting Spam is a completely normal thing and it happens to every Forum, regardless of your Software. So, if you're using SMF, XenForo, vBulletin and whatever other Forum Software, you're bound to get Spam no matter what.

Paid Forum-Software is bound to have much better Security in place but there will be less Spam-Prevention add-ons. Were as a Free and Open-Source Forum-Software like SMF, will have much more add-ons to choose from and since it's Open-Source, the Community can help make it's Security a lot better at a faster pace.

Dan's right there; regardless of which platform you use, you will encounter spam....

I get literally no spam on my vbulletin forum and it's been spam free for several years in a row now. Mainly because I do the following:

*rename the registration page
*Require email verification before they can register
*Require email verification after they register
*Use of recaptcha 2 on several important pages (creating a post, emailing, registering etc)
*Have setup a question at registration that must be answered to proceed

And for those manually running a program that make it through, they can't post links until they've made at least 5 posts.

But as is pointed out above, you put enough roadblocks in a spammer's way, they will eventually drop you and move along.

Thank you all for your opinion and thoughts. I understand we can't complete stop spam. But few software does come with effective spam management right. I just wanted to know that. Any idea on Woltlab?

Most free forum software tends to get far more amount of spam unless you have third party spam defense or firewall in place. Most sites have it anyway even it's paid. If you want a free option, you can always deal with the spam by banned them each time ad-block their emails and IPs address.

Seems like overkill to me. I just use Q and A. It's stopped spam on all my forums except one I had a few years ago.

But mind you, Q and A has to be tougher than "What is 1 + 1"?".

@Jason76 But nowadays the spammers are getting smart and they bypass Q&A also right? (tough questions)

1. You need to go to the support community of MyBB to ask about their recommendations. They probably have several plugins you can use.
2. Q&A challenge questions are effective when they're unique, non-general, and changing. You can't use the same Q&A over time.
3. Invision Community is indeed highly effective against spam. Every active license takes part in IPS Spam Defense service, which globally pools together all of the risk accounts from all communities, essentially creating a global net. The platform also comes with Google Captcha, Question-and-Answer challenge, and MFA for users to safeguard their personal accounts.

I'm sad to see forums swamped by spam (beginner forum owners) when it's so easy to stop it.
