Forum Software, which on is Better?

Between just those two... I think that Xenforo is probably better. (This doesn't mean Xenforo is the best, nor that you couldn't run a forum with vB. Merely that I think Xenforo is a better option.)

vBulletin has been getting a ton of negative feedback lately. People upset with their V5 release, people feeling like vBulletin isn't listening to them/their suggestions/comments, the attitude surrounding the recently ended vBulletin vs Xenforo lawsuit. (I mean just have a look at a few of the topics in this section to see recent anti-vB sentiments. Or at the very least concerns and warnings that vB may not be in the best shape.)

Xenforo on the other hand is a serviceable software. It works pretty well, it doesn't look super amazing but it's not extremely ugly either. (It apparently has a smaller memory use than many other softwares, especially IPB 3.x, so that's useful for larger sites.) Xenforo can also be somewhat cheaper than vBulletin (depending on what options you choose when you buy Xenforo) so that's always a plus.
(vBulletin is 250 USD for new license and 210 USD for an upgrade. Xenforo is 140USD... with extra options that increase cost.)

XenForo. I dont have too much experience with vBulletin but I have administered a site that used it and it is good, but XenForo is far better in my opinion and is much cheaper. Its sleek, easy to use and has easy theming and mods(or add-on as they call). There is A LOT of support for this software, even just in the XF community. People are quick to respond and help with whatever you need.

Depends on what you need, both forum systems provide differing services and focus, so if you need a million features, vBulletin. If you need a social system, xenForo.

Xenforo hands down. Vbulletin has been getting a lot of crappy reviews lately.

VB5 has, other versions are better, and better than Xenforo, VB5 has very little in the way of add on's at the moment, but you can pick up a VB 3.X.X licence for less than a Xenforo one, and it's better

I suppose if I absolutely had to and wanted to switch to paid software, I probably could put up with an older version of Vbulletin, but I'm kind of picky about security too, so on the other hand I'd rather shell out the few extra dollars and go for Xenforo... at least that way I'd be more protected if nothing else. I've always been strict on the security end of things. I don't mind the extra bells and whistles and I would happily accept suggestions, but the fact of the matter is it's always better to go for something more up to date...besides, does VB even offer support for mods under the 5.x series anymore? Usually when a new version of any software is out, support gets dropped for all older versions of that software, or they start dropping support bit by bit until you can't ask about them anymore.

Thanks for your reviews!

I decided to purchase a XenForo licence now!

About pricing, what would you recommend, should I buy their other stuffs or just basic package?

That becomes a lot like support for any other format or add on's, you ask the question in the relevant thread, and there will be people to help, there are even some who take over the support, Most of VB add on's are put up as free to adapt and copy, providing the original author is credited.

If I were you, I'd start with the basic package first, whatever that contains. You can always get the extras later on down the road.

I was going to suggest XenForo for you. I've had bad experiences with vB in the past (3.x wasn't too bad, but 4.x was horrible).

If XenForo doesn't work out for you, there's always IPB. Also, to give props to the free versions, I would also recommend SMF.

Having worked with lots of softwares, I would say XenForo as well, its simple, but it does a really good job!

You are very true, Ive had VB 3.7 which is great and still it rocks, but I haven't developed it. I seen in most forums people loves VB 3 X versions.

Personally I prefer vBulletin; it seems to have the better support and modifications.

I have used phpbb but I felt I was limited to what I could do with it without having to heavily edit the files (this was years ago mind; it may have changed since then). Since I'm a noob when it comes to anything to do with coding, and since vBulletin already has a lot of inbuilt features/mods are easier to install, I felt more comfortable with vB.
