Do you think that forums that are dedicated to a certain singer or singing group are a good or bad idea? For example, I am a member of two Backstreet Boys forums, one of them being called the Mature Fan Club of the Backstreet Boys, and the other one is simply Backstreet.net. However, it seems like whenever the Boys are not active, such as not coming out with new music, tour dates, or whatever, the board stops being active, but then when the group is active, then the board's active. I don't like certain sites like this really, because when the group totally goes down, like everyone retires, or if fans lose interest in the group all together, then stuff like that could cause the site to go down within a day or two. Plus, you have the aspect that some members of such sites are in their 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, or even older than that! And then you have the ones that are in their teens. What are your views on these kinds of forums?

Here's an example topic from a site I'm a member of regarding a related forum that hasn't been active in a few days: http://backstreetnet.robertmclean.org/b ... .php?t=991

A fanboy based forum can only go as far as the subject it's modeled after.

Like a TV show forum, will not be as active when the TV show is off the air ... but when it comes back for the next season, that forum gets more active.

I don't join too many forums like these.

I'd much prefer a forum about all music, or all TV shows, rather than just focusing on one icon.

With this, people actually think the singer or band members are going to join. I find that a bit funny, you can always have a fanclub but not an official club. 😉

I don't think it will last the next generation, when they die out, or when the die. It will be history, and no one will be as into it anymore.

That's true, especially if the memberbase is all made up of Teenagers. What's nice about the Backstreet.net one I'm a member of, is that even if the Backstreet Boys aren't doing anything as far as making music, promoting tour dates, or anything of the like, there are plenty of off topic sections to keep us fans busy as well. Now, MFC, on the other hand, they too have a couple of off topic sections, but the whole board is plain dead. My friends and I at Backstreet are starting to think that the members of MFC have grown up and gone on to different and even better things. Hence the reason why no one goes there anymore.

I think this will hold true of the Mature Fan Club, because no one goes on and posts any more. In fact, the last time I went on there, the last post was made three days before my 21st birthday. Not exactly what a person would call "active."

If you can get fans there, then why not. Just be wary that your crowd probably won't be as big as a general music forum.

Geek Stink Breath (Green Day) managed to pull it off, for example.

Says the guy running a forum about 'one game', as opposed to a series of games, or all games. 😉

Well, like I say, Backstreet.net is actually doing pretty well, considering what the site is technically about. But then again, there are also lots of off topic sections to post in during the singing groups "Downtime" and things like that.

The thing with those kind of forums is that your very limited to member range. I think those kind of forums only work if they are official or number 1 unoffical forums.

If you really like the band or artist yourself and enjoy talking about them, there is no harm in it. Maybe you could consider a generic or cryptic domain name for the forum. This would allow you to expand the forum topics at some stage in the future, should you decide to do that.

You need to be conscious of the fact that the band or artist may disband or do something terrible in the future. For example a Gary Glitter fan site might have been popular some years ago, but most people wouldn't want to own one now.

Everyone might be talking about Tiger Woods now, but will they still be talking about him in a year's time, if he is no longer playing golf?

Depends what music artist or group? If it's MJ, I suggest not making one about MJ. Too many.
