I didn't see a topic like this yet, and if I missed it please direct me to it.

Anyways, I like phpBB (3.0.x), but I'm not super familiar with other softwares as an admin. If I was to change from my current one to a new one, it would have to be able to transfer everything over from the current forums, and any customizations/extensions would have to be handled through the Admin panel. Basically I'm looking for the WordPress of forums without installing WordPress and bbPress. Do you guys have any ideas?

I actually tried WordPress and bbpress, it was horrible. Depending on your current customization you could look at mybb?

You could keep your existing phpbb software and use joomla for CMS purposes, they have a bridge plugin: http://extensions.joomla.org/extension/p8pbb-bridge

You can use IPB. They have their own blog and content management system which automatically integrates with the forum so you don't need a bridge.

Well, I really meant WordPress as my frame of reference for the Admin Dashboard. It's clean, it handles it's own upgrades, and you add everything through there like themes or plugins. phpBB, on the other hand, I have to go to their site for everything, FTP updates myself, and hope it works. I would like something easier than that basically.

I was looking at Woltlab Burning Board through a suggestion, does anyone have familiarity with it?

MyBB is the same way with having to download the packages and then upload them yourself so switching over to it would not help you in anyway. I used to use SMF and from what I remember the updates on that could be downloaded and installed through the admin panel, just like WordPress. While there are quite a few themes and plugins for the software, there isn't nearly as many as you would find for MyBB or phpBB since it is a less used software.

No, and I've only recently started hearing about it so I have no idea how it works, and again, it won't have all the addons like MyBB and phpBB has since there is a smaller community using it.

I think that you made up your mind, You can use Wordpress and IPB. Wordpres for the homepage. IPB is great, the ACP is easy and have so much options. and it's in a different folder from the Forum. If your Forum was down and with dodos (lol) the admin panel is not.

I have an Test website if you want to login and play around with the website just PM me for more details. and with pages app you can make allot of things with it. you have joined my website so you seen IPB4x

you can use IPB or XF 🙂

Personally I am a fan of myBB, phpBB and Xenforo🙂

It depends on whether or not you want to install mods as to whether free or premium is better. Next, if you're just dealing with free stuff, then it boils down to the mods available and the look. For instance, phpBB has more mods than MyBB, but MyBB has these unique large emoticons. Note, among premium choices, the look is probably the deciding factor.

Free is also good as paid, I tend to have mixed free and paid like if I want to have an plugin and it's paid then I have no choice
