I found a forum, where the admins block sigs for people smarter than they are..
I think that shows how immature the person that does something like that is.

Yep, and it sucks for people who want to use the signatures correctly. -😉-

I know i known spammer that disabled my sig, for just putting a
link to my forum... They're on a free host (07x.net), how can I
get them removed, they are a known spammer..

I can understand if forums block signatures if the member has less than say 5 posts but if they block signatures altogether then it is pretty silly.

Sometimes they have to though if signature rules just keep getting abused.

There was a MOD for IPBFree that made you (as admin) able to disable just one users signature power. If something like this is around for phpBB, id like to know about it, it was a great idea and worked wonders for those members that just cant follow rules.

It's a default feature in phpBB, go to Admin Panel -> Users and Groups (tab) -> Click "User's Permissions" (from the menu on the left) -> *type username* -> Click "Advanced Permissions" -> Click the "Post" tab -> On the bottom row, can "Can use Signature: Yes" to "Can use Signature: Never".-> Click "Apply Permissions".

I really don't see a problem with administrators disabling signatures, and even more so I don't understand why people start to complain when their permissions are taken away. Signatures are a priviledge, not a right and at the end of the day it's the administrator's decision. Lots of people like to post affiliate links in signatures, and if you're using a forum that doesn't allow it then I can understand why the admin would take permissions away.

With other forums it's done purely for presentational purposes. A post without a signature looks far more professional than some of the posts I have seen on this forum whereby they have huge signature images, and plenty of them. Restricted signatures / disabled signatures make for a much more enjoyable forum experience for those who want to read through a topic instead of looking at a galley of Signature Art and links to other sites.

I would only disable them as a form of punishment to maybe a particular member and that's it really, unless there are a lot of members abusing it.

I let my forum members do what they like with there signature, can't see the point of stopping anything, i can understand the "5 post" type situation, but i would like members to go straight into the profile page and get themselves looking good immediately.

If you have a member being an idiot, then stop his/hers of course, but let all genuine members have the free roam of all and everything to get some links going on!! -razz-

I've been to forums like this, and I would never join them on purpose. These forums that I ended up being on were from a post exchange.

I can understand them being disabled for users under a certain amount of posts on certain types of forums where people are more likely to abuse their permissions like on advertising forum like here.

Exactly, they are more likely to join, post a couple of ads(or spam i suppose!) and they go off never to return, it really is down to the type of forum if it is required to include post minimums.

If i dont get a sig, or if i have to post more than 5 to get a sig, i don't join.

I don't mind one bit. Scrap that; I love it.

Steam Users' Forums. Best example of a site like this that I know. I've been on there for a few years and I love the place (most posts I have on any forum, and that is with post count in OT disabled; ~3,300).
Occasionally you'll get some newbie making a thread complaining that there are no signatures or avatars but the thread ends up filled with "it'd be nice, but I don't care, the forum is great without them and we don't need them" posts.

Meh. I guess being that the first forum I was on (Steam Users' Forums) had no signatures or avatars lends me to not care...

I can see why people would be annoyed though, a lot of people like to feel like they are individual and add a personal touch to their internet persona, and signatures and avatars help this greatly.

However, on any forum I run the most I would do is limit the # of images/links and the size of images allowed in signatures.
Otherwise you wind up with a forum filled with posts that are smaller than the signature that follows them; which looks crap.

I don't disable sigs, but from the start a new member can't have a viewable sig. I use our shop mod to allow people to purchase the right to display a sig. I guess it works like a motivation, if new members see other members with a sig, they'll post more so they can have one too.
