Don't you just hate them? They go mad at you for bumping a topic that is a couple months old , say your a new member and you want to join in a discussion? Its stupid IMO.
On a forum I hang out at all the time, the thing called "necroposting" is not allowed, which is posting in an topic more than one month old and you're not the owner. There it is okay though, as it only applies to sections where it would just be annoying and probably useless.
The problem with this; is it ONLY works on bigger forums. Most new forums, get their rules, and ideas, from bigger forums they are a member on.
It really is pointless for an up & coming forum to have a no bumping old threads rule, but it's in their guidelines when they first put up the forum 😀
Thing about the No Bimping old topics rule is, Two things bad happen from this.
For one, you're left out of the conversation even though you just joined. And are resricted form talking about something that interests you.
And, two, most say don't bump, but you can re-create the topic, which is kinda stupid. Plus, you get the "cool" long term members being rude when you do make the topic again. The end up saying stuff like, "haven't we already talked about this a long time ago?" or the smart alleck response, "repeat topic".
I allow bumping, so long as it ADDS to the discussion long forgotten. It does get annoying when someone bumps a 6 month old topic with , "yeah I agree."
If I were to ever go back to running a forum again (not likely!) I would never put in the no bumping rule. In fact, I never had that rule to begin with, as I think it is a stupid rule, and as was said before, if a new member wants to bump up an old thread, Let them!
this happended to me the other week i reply to a topic a couple of weeks out and then they locked the topic lol and ashley what happened to all your forums :O
Necroposting can be annoying in certain sections. For example the support forum or member introductions. However if someone posts a constructive reply to an old topic somewhere else in the board, then I have no problem with it. But it must be constructive.
Necroposting in a topic about it, the irony.
I personally like Grave Digging, I don't see anything wrong with it, it's just creating more activity for the forum.
It drives me nuts when a forum doesn't allow grave digging because I like to make as many posts as I can on a forum; it really limits me as I am not going to make 100 billion new topics. I'll just look like a spammer.
Plus, having 50 topics all about the same thing is ridiculous and just clutters up the forum.
Of course I will respect the forum rules, if they say it's not allowed.
I have to agree with you there, Hotspot. There's nothing wrong with bumping an old thread IMHO. For me it doesn't matter how old a thread may be, if it's still there then it should still be able to be written in. If you're such a control freak and hate this, then delete old threads, simple!
