I wonder why some forums are so strict with posts that their approval is needed before the post becomes published. This approval of post means you cannot see what you posted until the mod or the admin had approved your post. It is a definite turnoff for writers. What do you think is the reason why the forum requires approval of posts? If that approval is to deter spammers then I think it is not the right solution.
Actually, that's not a good way to keep spam out. Instead, all you have to do is ask people to answer a question when registering. For instance, a good one might be the spelling of something backward.
I only have two boards that needs approved that are advertisement related and A new review other then that it's all open. Also if a member spams and gets good amount of warning points then that member is set in that rank that every time he posts his content needs approving
Its sometimes annoying waiting for your posts get approval. I have check back daily for the moderator logins. Astonishingly I have registered on a couple of forums some times back, where I have posted 3 months back and my posts are still under approval.
I don't really why see this is a problem. I think this could potentially annoy members and restrict them from want to posts. If the mods, don't like what they're posting, they can just put them on moderation queue instead. Why restrict everything from having postal approval? This could make members leave.
In some cases, I can see doing this when a new member registers on your forum and help catch spammers upon joining. However, I'm not a fan of using it after a certain length of time or after a certain number of posts.
I wouldn't ever do this to new members because they will leave. There are lots of other ways to deal with spam if it's a problem on your site.
When we did have an issue with spammers on the large forum, we made posting in the introductions area mandatory to unlock posting priveledges on the rest of the site. The downside to this was that the vBulletin only updated permissions every 60 minutes, so a newbie could be waiting up to one hour to make more posts elsewhere.
We were at the end of out tether at the time though with 200 bot accounts daily that were bypassing the captchas and other features. The forum couldn't sustain that level of spam bombardment, so it called for drastic measures. Most smaller forums won't get hit on that scale. The site was no 1 on google for a popular term, so it was almost like an attack. Eventually, we found the amazing Spam-o-matic (which isn't supported anymore) and we no longer had to restrict newbies to the intro forum.
IP banning China and a few other places worked wonders too. XD. Look at all of the other things that you can do before considering moderated posting. The above are a couple of ideas that we had. Moderated Posting should only be used for problematic members that you think could be taught how to post properly rather than outright banning them.
