I'm not sure, but one of the reasons, as with any forums is taking loading time into consideration. This applies to both graphic headers and photographic headers,, both of which can be reduced in image quality and sixe in photoshop or any other comprable art programme. Especially with photographic headers, you still want it to look pretty, but at the same time pixalated or poor quality images could be quite unpleasant to look at, but you want something that laods quickly at the same time.
Although it's been closed for the greater part of a decade, I did this with a wildlife forum I used to run, but blended photographic images totgeher to make a photographic blend or "Blends" as I called them.
