FP Staff Conference Call #1

I will gladly connect my Paypal for the packages if Cam doesn't want to 😉

I know there's all this discussion about FP currency and paying for it (and I think it's great that certain people have stepped up to volunteer), but has anyone stopped to think and ask whether the currency motivates and incentivizes in the right manner? Does it transfer into packages that are useful and enticing?

And most importantly, does incentivizing users at $0.05 / post with a non-interested, non-involved fake member add any enduring, useful value to those forums? When you pay someone else at literally one of the cheapest rates possible, can you get high value content that is on topic, relevant, educational and informative?

I don't have answers to these questions, bit these are the questions that I would be asking as webmaster on these conference calls.

The current shop addon that is currently there can be setup to run Paypal, it is just not currently setup to connect it. I've brought it up previously that it could be used, but I usually got a hesitant response about using any extension connected to paypal, other than the member upgrades and the ad addons.

That is news to me. There are no options regarding setting up items to be sold through PayPal within the Shop add-on, as far as I'm aware. The only tidbit that I see that even mentions PayPal is within the Credits add-on, which is where it allows individuals to buy credits with PayPal cash, but again, that's not buying actual items within the shop, that's just buying FP$. And that's the Credits add-on, not the Shop add-on. I also don't see that feature mentioned at all in the official topic of the Shop add-on on XenForo.

There is the DragonByte eCommerce add-on that could work, but again, that's a whole add-on that would be present outside of our Shop add-on.

Feel free to share what I'm missing.

Basically with the add-on, you can run multiple currencies, and with that option, you can choose which one you want to have PayPal connected to it. With how it is currently setup, there would be no interaction between the possible PayPal currency option, and the fp cash option, due to the trade function being turned off.

So @Cammeh, since it is Saturday now and I obviously didn't get a reply, I'll explain a little more.

The Currency Addon, allows you to have multiple forum currencies to use. In addition to this, it also allows you to have paypal connected to any or all of those currencies. With this, if you have paypal connected to one of those currencies, you have the option to allow users to "deposit" or "purchase" so much credit in that currency.

So, lets say you want a USD Currency listed, you can create a forum currency listed as "USD", and then set it up to have paypal use. I believe you can also define whether or not you can allow users to donate that currency to fellow users. To prevent people from earning from it while posting, you don't have to define anything for posting, and just leave it at zero for everything. Once you create the "USD" currency option, you then have the option to create paypal purchase packages. These packages allow people to add a specific amount to their accounts, so that they can use it at any time. With this, you can then decide whether to allow one of the two (or both) of the following: shop purchases of various things (like posting packages, account upgrades or whatever else, in USD), or marketplace use of the currency.

If you decide to do just shop related options, you can make it so that the currency purchases through paypal, match the costs of the lowest, to the highest costing item in the shop; this way, someone can only purchase only what is available, strictly based on what they want to pay for.

If the marketplace idea is taken, you would need to add a withdraw option, so that at some point, a user can withdraw their earnings to their own paypal account. With this, you would need to keep a balance in your own paypal, that matches, or even is a little higher than the total holdings on the forum.

Whatever you decide you want to do, you would need to consider who will be handling the paypal purchases for whatever is involved. SO, if you want to just allow post packages through this, you can have it setup with your own, or the paypal of the Package Team Leader. With the current version of XF, you can allow multiple personal/business paypal account options, based on which addon you want the payments to go through. I think you can even have multiple paypal accounts assigned to the same addon, if the setting is configured correctly.

I really like this idea, @Cammeh .
