For someone who wants to get started with graphic editing, what free alternative would you recommend to the Adobe Photoshop? I have saw people recommending GIMP mostly as a free option. Is anyone here with other thoughts? Don't need anything too advanced, just something mainly for basic editing.

Paint.net, Gimp, Paint is already install on the OS anyway lol...

For me I just go right into Adobe Photoshop CS6 or even the new updated version

Paint.net, 100%. It's completely free and there are a ton of tutorials, plugins, etc. out there for it. It's an amazing program and I've been designing using PDN exclusively for over a decade.

GIMP is probably the most popular option. It's not bad, but definitely not as feature-rich. It's good for beginners to try out design as a hobby or interest before making an investment in Photoshop CC.

I actually wouldn't recommend MS Paint for anything more than very simple image markup. Like, circling something in a screenshot, or making a low-quality meme. Text and shapes in Paint are aliased, which means that the edges are hard and jagged. This creates low-quality images, unless you're exceptionally patient and detailed.

I honestly think that you need a lot of patience for using those free programs like GIMP and Paint.Net to get the results that you want with photoshop. KDE's Krita and other packages seems to be good option if you want something free. Otherwise if you don't want to rely on Adobe's cloud licenses, better to go with Serif and Corel.

GIMP does most of the work to me. I used to have Pinta, which is an MS Paint alternative. Believe me, you can do funny things with it.

I used Corel PaintShop Pro for a few years before moving on to Photoshop Elements, and then Photoshop CS3. I remember it being a decent program for what I wanted to do, and it looks like there's a 2019 version. It's on sale from their store right now for $79.99 ($59.89 on Amazon), so not free, but that does seem to be a perpetual license.

I'm a huge advocate for Paint.Net, but I forgot to mention that you can't do vectors on there. You can open up and save files as a psd though, which is very helpful.

Photoshop is def the easiest to learn if you ask me. I have been using it several years now. And they have made it so its very affordable with a monthly subscription fee as opposed to having to shell out alot of money at one go.

I can get it for free but I don't want to.

Oh ya its easy to get it for free, its been all over the internet for years. But purchasing it has its benifits, and isnt all that expensive anymore.

Well, it is hella expensive for me. 🙁

Will just stick to GIMP.

If your currency is not strong, a lot of good things will be expensive. Either you use cracked apps or use tools like GIMP and Inkscape. But by no means they are weak apps.

I’m sure once upon a time photoshop was about £800! So the fact you can have monthly billing is amazing. Microsoft Office is the same. I have mine billed monthly

My CC subscription is about $56USD/mo. :confounded: I never paid for an Adobe product until this year, despite being a "customer" for well over a decade. I got it for free during the four years I worked at Adobe, which was amazing. It took them about a month after I left to close my account lol.
