Free Contest Prizes

So if you were to host a contest on your forum, what would some prizes you would give out that didn't involve you having to spend any money?

-Light (in terms of weight) material goods that you already have and perhaps don't want.

-Forum Posts

-Elite/V.I.P membership

-Permanent backlink on your site

-Permanent link in your, on your site

-Some sort of badge/medal

So would forum posts lol. And not every contest appeals to everyone, like logo contests (just as an example), if you're useless at graphics you can't really participate in them 😛

Bad idea. Staff should be picked based on their merits not because they won a contest.

I always have trouble getting people to participate in contests on my site; I have little to offer other than hugs (and they get those anyway). :lol:

In the past, I've given out custom ranks and points (although we don't have those anymore).

If they don't have a website, nor are you allowed to spend money, then it would probably be something like a VIP badge, increase storage space, unlimited attachments and maybe a forum blog.

I give away albums / band merchandise that is usually donated by the bands or record companies themselves. Occasionally I'll spend a small amount of money on a CD or something, but not often (as I'm usually skint! lol)

Well i did one recently but it didn't really work as I don't have many members at the moment, and this one did technically involve spending money, however it wasn't money out of my own pocket. I used the funds generated through google adsense, as it's the visitors that generate those funds then it's nice to give it back. obviously if the contest works when you have enough members.

It's difficult to say whether i should recommend it. Some days i get clicks for like maybe a whole week, but others like recently i've had 6 days of no clicks. So it all depends whether you feel comfortable having ads on your site. I'm only having them on there to start with to try and generate some money for these competitions.

I've also considered, as my site is a gaming site, of spending the google adsense revenue on a game to give away. Like a brand new game for the XBox or something and that's the prize. But it's just not worth me doing that until i get more members.

One other idea I just thought of is, taking my site as an example (i.e. gaming site), find competitions on other sites where you can win games, or equipment and enter them. If you get lucky and win then you have a prize to give away on your own site, and therefore no money spent besides postage. And that can be done for any type of site.
