Is there any interest in a free web host with cpanel? I'm thinking of buying another dedicated server and setting one up. I don't want to do it though if nobody would use it. My goal would be to make a free host that actually WORKS. Most of the ones out there suck and average 50% uptime or less.

Yes, But fast servers and more uptime then any other free host that is up there.

Obviously it works if you have the reliability and good uptime. I for one surely use it 😀

It would be a fast dedicated server (quad core, 100mbps internet) and would have reliability and good uptime. I don't run junk websites.

I'm interested! 😎

It sounds like enough people are interested. I bought a rather cool domain name and got a trial of cpanel on a development VPS. I'm estimating 2-3 weeks before I have it all learned and get the production server (dedicated) set up.

99.9 % uptime,
Fast Servers,
good help support,

if you done it, you got some good clients for free web hosting ,

That's the goal. I just need to figure out how to make money off it to pay for the cost of the server.

Standard ad applied to each hosted site, or the post-to-host route, and have ads on the forums.

post to host is the better option, and have ads on the forum. no one would go for a free hosting if u have ads on them, u will lose so many clients if u do so, but post to host can work wonders if u also provide the reliability.

Yes, I am absolutely trying to avoid putting ads on the websites. I could do the posting and then fill the forums with ads, that sounds like the most reasonable option right now. I was thinking of putting a link in the footer of people's websites back to the main website. Would anyone be opposed to that?

Yeah...well to make it reasonable and make the clients go for this option, you should make it optional, and give a small relief if they have a link back your site. For example you can reduce the number of posts required or like give them forum credits for having the link on their website.
So they may not mind that much then, and also go for it if they can not stay much active on your forum.

You could do a packages system. Such as they can remove the link with even more posts. Just an option. Tier the plan with their posting, having to purchase the new plan monthly with their posts or credits earned posting.

I really don't want to force ads on people, so that option is out. I'm thinking of combining the ideas people are giving to something like this:

Package 1:
1GB Disk / 20GB Bandwidth - No Posting Required

Package 2:
5GB Disk / 75GB Bandwidth - 50 Posts/Month Required

The disk/bandwidth numbers are just random, I haven't decided on the limits yet. Basically, I don't want to force people to post either, so this would give them an option. You can have higher limits if you're willing to contribute, but it isn't required to have the free hosting.

Edit: Here's what I decided. I'm going to do the above idea (small free and larger post-to-host package). I'm going to buy a smaller dedicated server to start with. If this hosting thing works well, in a few months I can buy a larger server and will add on a paid-hosting option which can help pay for the costs. I just can't afford $400 up front plus a payment of $350/month to start with.

Yes start with a smaller budget and when you're making money from the forum ads then you can upgrade your reseller.

I'm not using any reseller hosting. I'm buying my own server and hosting it myself. This will be dedicated hardware specifically for this project.

Okay that's big then, good luck with that. I'll surely be there when you launch it. 🙂

A lot of people create free hosts for the same reason, but eventually give up. Why would your host be any different?

He has been extremely dedicated to IcyBoards so far and it is turning into a fine success. At least IMO.
