You think so, bro? I've found the contrary to be trule lately tbh. Visitors look at the stats, see the place is active, atempt to enter the forum... and are encouraged to register. That's what I imagine has been happening anyways.

It's possible. I know it's a turn off for me. I read some posts first and make sure it's somewhere I would fit in. To each his own I suppose.

You should open the forum to guests to begin with. You're losing valuable visitors/spiders. Of course, people are going to join and check out the content, but what about the long run when these users leave? You need a back up plan, and that is, opening the site to guests/spiders, so that your content can get crawled and ranking on the search engines.

Just my opinion anyways, good luck with your forum!

Thanks. You make quite a good point really. The thing is... the main reason I decided to lock out guests was because members of the forum would sometimes just browse the board for a while and not bother to log in. By locking out guests, they need to log in to read content which not only makes for better online user figures but also creates posts. Now they're logged in, they may aswell post.
