Are your moderators friendly? I love it when the forum's moderators are friendly especially when the post a positive comment on my thread. It gives me a sense of belonging. But grumpy moderators are a turn off particularly those who would reprimand you via a comment that everyone can see. There is a local forum with one moderator who acts like a truant officer. For a small misdemeanor in a post, the reprimand comes immediately that sometimes lead to suspension of the member. I wonder why there are mods like that. And I also wonder why the site owner allows people with bad manners to be moderators. It's really puzzling to me.

It depends on the user to be honest. I don't think something like racism should be dealt with on a hush hush level, especially when you have an international forum. No one should be made feel unwelcome because someone has decided to paint you with a certain brush.
If they want to discriminate other users publicly on the forum, they're definitely going to get called down for it. Sometimes, it is better if people can see and understand why a certain type of behaviour isn't tolerated. If they know that you are telling people off for discriminating a person or people rather than challenging an ideology, then they're less likely to rise up and think you're being one sided. Of course, one should do this in as professional a way as possible, but you get the idea.

I'd think I'd be too friendly, I'd let people get away with things that other moderators wouldn't. Nothing serious of course, but I'd be a lot more lenient than people would. I don't like telling people off or calling them out, but if gets their attention and other people to notice this thing then I would.

I love moderators who are friendly generally all the time. While I understand when a moderator is grumpy, or if they post something publicly; I would rather deal with a happy and pleasant moderator, than one who gets annoyed all the time, and will react negatively to everything.

Too friendly is bad too. I know there are times where even I am like "I SHOULD infract him for this, but I'll give him another chance." I do give chances to people because I don't believe in outright banning someone unless they joined specifically to troll. There are people out there though that don't give a toss about your forum or it's members and you really have to be prepared for that. I haven't used the banhammer very often to be honest. I can count on 1 hand the people that I banned permanently over the past 10 years. There might have been a few suspensions, but when someone is being beyond disruptive. One user got banned permanently from SC recently after being given a multitude of chances over the past year. The members don't miss him either. We were all too nice when it came to him and we've actually decided that his kinda shit isn't going to fly anymore. He is the only legit member of the forum who has been banned so far on Sakuga City.
All of our mods are nice people. Maybe one or two of them are too nice, but it strikes a balance. I would kick their ass if I saw them throwing their power around, but I don't think any of them are capable of that. XD.
