Here are some tips I can offer:

1) Use a different forum theme. There are many free SMF themes available, so check some of them out and use one that feels more "gaming" like other than the default.

2) Fill up the boards with content. Create some topics yourself so that your forum doesn't look so empty. Visitors will never join an inactive, empty forum.
