From experience I have to say go with which ever one you personally find more interest in or you'll risk burning out quickly on building and advertising it.
That being said you're on the right track with keeping it to one console. IMO general gaming forums are a lot to chew and get going.
I would agree with PoBoy here. I believe whatever you do most and like to do the best, as well as know the most about, should be the forum or blog you create.
I would go for a design forum if I were you, as gaming forums have a lot of competition, more then design forums from what I can see. If you specialize in a certain console such as the xbox 360 or PS3, you would have a great amount of competition from the other "one-console" discussion forums.
You would need some unique ideas and something to attract users to your forum, and not the bigger forums for the certain console you choose to do. I would say if you go with the gaming forum or blog, you should ask some friends: "Why should you join or read this site, when you can just go on the top results on Google," If they don't have a great answer, then your forum or blog most likely won't succeed.
Blog is more easy compare to forum. But, it just depends on how well you are putting your effort in it.
Forum, is about gathering people and make them register to yours. Not just that, you must also know how to admin them and monitoring the posts. The Good thing about Forums are 100% register users are yours. They are your personal traffic and personal visitors. Forum doesn't have to be active all the time.. users may just drop by and discuss few things and then come back again if they have time.
In Blogs, you must pay attention to getting on updates news and writing an article about it. That way you sure can get a "chance(8%-45%)" of Visitors. Then you will still have to market your websites.. And let users look at your website and make comments.
hey volux, would you mind doing an exchange of sort after you started it? Long-time exchange I'm talking about, 1/1 per article you can relate to only. I'll give you the choice to choose whichever articles you wish to post on.
BTW, I'd say you should do a design and gaming blog. If you have enough knowledge about both of these fields. You can use wordpress and organize it into two categories. As for design, you can post how-tos for designing themes and stuff like that. And also simple tips for favicon designs, etc.
For gaming, I think you should do some reviews on games and explain how to deal with technical difficulties and things as such. I know some people who don't really have enough tech knowledge about the console.
oh ok then, you can explain how to deal with pc freezes and a bunch of other problems people might encounter. Offer gaming reviews too. And what platforms they should use for what game, etc.
oh well, because I'd have liked to know about how to resolve tech problems and what platform to use for which game too. Your gaming review is an awesome idea too, though. I like gaming. It's just it's going to make it more useful and unique.
That may be a category to add. Thank you for the suggestion 😛.

-- 21 Sep 2011, 22:42 --

That may be a category to add. Thank you for the suggestion 😛.
