It's been several years since I last ran a gaming forum, and I'd like to try getting another one up and going.

If I were to start a gaming forum, I'd want it to be distinctive from a lot of the other gaming forums out there. I'm not looking to compete with other forums, but I'd like to offer something refreshing. General gaming forums are already quite common, and I'd have to come up with a niche that isn't saturated or unpopular with most gamers out there.

I've thought about keeping it mostly retro, up to the original PlayStation. Honestly, I'm just not into much of the last few generations, although I must admit that indie games have sparked a lot of interest. If I had a great gaming rig, then I'd be a full-time PC gamer.

Which direction do you think that I should take? I'd like something simple, albeit very appealing.

Ok,
I love the idea about the gaming forum. DO you think about a forum that link people who play offline game play online. I mean there are many games that people can play offline but these day, the developer have made them possible to play online through some gate like Garena or Steam.
I see some of my friend create a small group in a game forum (just a thread in a general topic of this forum), to play Football manager online every weeks. Well I think if you choose this niche is awesome, I will love it. This is also about PC games too.

I always say, do what you're interested in. It makes you more passionate about the forum, however it may be harder to find people for those specific niches.

Gaming forum wise recently - I think more people want a place to advertise their twitch/youtube/streaming services. As well as a place to maybe make teams/matches with eachother. I'd have a bit of all gaming though honestly. Have a retro area, but have new areas as well. I wouldn't want to limit myself, but that's because I game with people who admittingly prefer newer games right now.

I for one would love to see a retro gaming forum myself, seeing how I'm more of a retro gamer too. While I still like more modern day gaming, retro games just are more fun to play. Plus there are tons of people who mod older games too, for example I mod the old Sega Master System and Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games. You could allow people to post their Doom WADS too if it's on a retro gaming forum. Plus there are some indie developers who still make games for older consoles, take Watermelon for example. They've released quite a few RPGs for the Sega Genesis just in the last five years, and just ported one of them to the Dreamcast too. I know another person who worked on a game for the Dreamcast, his game I believe is still in development.

Well I wish you luck with a retro forum, though I haven't seen many active gaming forums keep a retro gaming board going.

I think you'd reach out to a large audience who are into retro games these days. I haven't actually seen a community just based on classic gaming, so it may be a good idea to create one, it would be a great opportunity. I say go for it! Good luck if you decide to take this route. 😀
